The 3.40pm on Tuesday at Royal Ascot sees Aidan O’Brien’s star Churchill jump out into action. The two year old has had an immense season and he hasn’t failed to deliver having both the England and Irish 2,000 Guineas in some style as well. So there are no questions over his form and the colt will be out in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes looking for his fifth successive victory at this level.
His victory at Curragh just further enhanced his star credentials and O’Brien is running Peace Envoy and Lancaster Bomber in the race as well. Churchill took out both Lancaster Bomber and Thunder Snow at Curragh last month and punters are going to have a tough time opposing him in this field. Churchill is 4/6 at bet365 to win the St James’s Palace Stake on Tuesday. This is a big race though particularly because of the challenge of Barney Roy.
Barney Roy won at Newbury in his second outing back in April and then he challenged Churchill in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket when he came in second by a length to O’Brien’s star charge. This is a top class prospect in the making, but small mistakes at the 2000 Guineas while under pressure to perform against Churchill suggests that his time will probably come a little bit later and isn’t quite ready to handle any situation in front of him.
While Churchill isn’t a big price from a betting perspective there is enough meat on the bone for such a strong favourite for punters to get returns from. It is just too difficult to see anyone stopping him from gaining his third win on the bounce in Berkshire really and since his third place finish in his juvenile debut, he has won each of his last seven races. Churchill is already the top three-miler around and he can further consolidate that on Tuesday.
