Clinton still favorite in 2016 US Presidential Election betting despite debate defeat

Hillary Clinton is still running as heavy favourite to win the US Presidential election that will be polled on November 8th. The Democrat candidate went toe to toe with Republican nominee Donald Trump on Sunday night in the second of three US Presidential Debates, and Clinton was deemed to have lost the debate after winning the first one with some ease. She seemed to let up a little bit on her direct attacks on Trump, missing some opportunities to drive home how Republican senators have been pulling their support for Trump after the release of the video where he had made derogatory remarks over women.

But it was Trump who went into the second debate with arms swinging and he landed some big blows on Clinton and her husband Bill. It was a highly tempered spectacle between the two Candidates, which at times didn’t have the look of having anything much to do with a Presidential race, instead it was just a clash between two people who clearly don’t like each other at all. Even though Trump was deemed to have shaded the second Debate, his chances of winning the Election hasn’t improved really according to the bookmakers, as the real estate mogul is still a big 3/1 shot in a two horse race.

Trump was 2/1 in the market just last weekend, before the video about him groping women was released, the thing which sparked a Republic exodus of support for him, but he defended himself in the debate while getting in his own blows about Hillary’s private email investigation by the FBI, including a snipe that Clinton would be in jail if he had been in charge, over it. So Trump went in guns a-blazing but while his performance may have halted the slide of support flooding away from him from his own party, it did little to impact his chance of sitting in the Oval Office.

Barry Orr, Spokesperson for Betfair, said: “Although there was only a marginal movement during the debate, the market had already exploded into life over the weekend as Trump’s campaign trail seemingly fell off a cliff in the light of some damning footage from 2005.

“The out-of-favour Republican candidate entered Sunday night’s debate at 6.00, his lowest price since becoming the official nominee but after a not-tragic performance from the businessman he was backed in to 5.00.

“With less than four weeks to go until the election Trump will be disappointed to have entered the second live debate at 6.00, his highest price since he was announced as Republican Nominee, especially given that he entered the first live debate at 2.66 (38% chance) his lowest price to date.

“It’s still a tight race but confidence in Trump is at an all-time low, it may be that the public is expecting more skeletons to be revealed in the coming weeks.”
