CSKA Moscow v Tottenham Betting Preview – UEFA Champions League 27th September

These two are running in the same boat heading into Match Day Two, with both of them having lost their opening games 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League. Spurs were unravelled through a lack of composure at the back against Monaco, coupled with not having enough passion to mount a second half comeback. They head out to Russia in need of a win now to get themselves in the qualification picture so a bit of pressure is running on them. CSKA Moscow were downed by Bayer Leverkusen on Match Day One and they also need to find a response. A big game of catch up then, can Spurs ride their positive wave of domestic form to an away win?

CSKA Moscow v Tottenham Betting Tips

So not an ideal start for either of these in this season’s UEFA Champions League. CKSA Moscow were downed 2-1 at Bayer Leverkusen to make a losing start and on top of that, they will need to snap a winless streak of form at home against English clubs if they are going to get their qualification campaign up and running. They haven’t won any of their last four on home soil against English sides, their last win coming over Aston Villa back in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup. They have drawn their last two at home against English sides though and overall their home record is W2 D2 L3 record against English sides. In last season’s UEFA Champions League they held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at home and lost 1-0 at Old Trafford. So they can dig in there.

The season before that, they came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 home draw with Manchester City as well. But it’s hard to see beyond a point in the game for them, because they are up against a very tidy Spurs side. But there are reasons to back the home side to avoid defeat. This is the first time that Spurs and CSKA Moscow will have met competitively. CSKA’s defence in the Champions League isn’t great so there will be chances coming for the Lilywhites. CSKA Moscow have conceded in each of their last 23 UEFA Champions League matches, a run which goes right back to 2011. Their last four goals in the Champions League have all happened in the first half of the matches as well and under 2.5 goals is trading at a price of 3/4 with online betting site Bet365, while Both Teams To Score will return you a price of 4/5. Going back to CSKA Moscow holding for a draw, there is a 5/1 poke on a 1-1 correct score.

So what can Spurs muster up? They have been doing fine on the domestic front, but this isn’t an easy game for them. English clubs have gone W2 D2 on their last four visits in the UEFA Champions League to CSKA Moscow, so Spurs should avoid defeat. In their five previous games against Russian sides, Spurs have gone with a W3 D1 L1 record, their only defeat happening at Rubin Kazan in the 2011/12 Europa League. Their away form in Europe does have to be noted here going forward, as last season in the UEFA Europa League, Tottenham only recorded a W1 D2 L2 record. In their previous Champions League campaign, Spurs didn’t win any of their group stage matches away from home in a D2 L1 record. So that does cast a little doubt over their ability to win this one.

Overall Spurs have failed to win any of their last four UEFA Champions League games now (D1 L3) and they have netted just the one goal in that sequence of games too. Harry Kane is sidelined through injury of course, so you have Vincent Janssen at 2/1 in the anytime goalscorer market, with Son Heung-Min who is in great form at the moment, running at the same price. From CSKA Moscow’s side of things, Lacina Traore is the same 2/1 quote as well. Spurs created eleven corner kicks in their match day one encounter against Monaco, but just could not turn all of that pressure into goals. They have to be more focused at the back and more ruthless going forward to survive in the UEFA Champions League. They are on a three match winning streak on the domestic front, but can they land something in this tricky European away game? Spurs are 3/1 to take a win to nil.

Tottenham 11/8, CSKA Moscow 9/4, Draw 12/5

CSKA Moscow v Tottenham Predictions

It may be worth siding with the draw in the match outright in this one. Spurs aren’t running in winning form away from home in Europe while the Russians have held both Man Utd and Man City to draws at home in the last couple of seasons. The Russians are not a big threat, but they can dig in and frustrate, and Spurs showed on Match Day One that they may be lacking a little bit of UEFA Champions League savvy. Draw and under 2.5 goals.
