Canucks to hold on to title in Edmonton

Sports Betting

It is off to Edmonton, Canada for the Curling World Championships 2017 and the exciting action on the ice gets underway on April 1st and will draw to its conclusion on the 9th. This is being hosted at the Northlands Coliseum and there are twelve nations in attendance, most of them European. Canada will be defending their title on home soil then after beating Denmark in the final last year for their 35th Curling World Championship title. It’s little surprise then that at Coral, the Canucks are going into this home tournament as outright favourites with Skip Brad Gushue back to add to his title from last year.

If ever a nation has been dominant at a sport, then it is Canada with Curling. Their men have won the Curling World Championships 35 times and the second most successful nation behind them in the history of the tournament is Sweden who have collected seven gold medals. So pretty much this is Canada’s title to lose one would imagine, but they have been under increasing pressure from the Swedes in the last few years. Canada have won four of the last seven World Championships, but just one of the last four with Sweden collecting two of the last four.

It is Sweden, who are actually the topped ranked nation going into Curling World Championships Betting 2017 with Skip Niklas Edin leading the way again for them. British interest comes in from Scotland who are ranked 16th in the world and they have two-time World Champions David Murdoch back as Skip for them. Scotland’s last time came back in 2008 and aside from Sweden and Canada, the only other nation to have won it since then is Norway in 2014. Along with Canada as hosts, eight teams from the 2016 European Curling Championships (which was on by Sweden) join up.

They are Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Russia, Germany, Scotland and Italy along with the Netherlands who were the winners of the World Challenge Games. The United States are there because of their win at the 2017 America’s Challenge and the top two from the 2016 Pacific-Asian Curling Champions, Japan and China make up the numbers in at the Curling World Championships 2017.

Curling World Championships Betting 2017 Preview

With so many European nations making up the numbers in this one, it is worth starting with a look at last year’s European Championships. Sweden swept the board winning eight of their nine matches along the way and they took down Norway in a 6-5 win in the Final there. So that speaks to the threat of both of them heading into the Curling World Championships and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them both in the final four. Switzerland and Russia were the other losing semi-finalists, but if you were expecting either of them to come through then it would be Switzerland and they did come out on top in the bronze medal match against the Russians.

But it is going to be a big ask for Switzerland to win this one outright, so too Norway. Sweden are just so dominant on the continent at the moment having won the last three European Championship titles on the bounce and four of the last five editions of the tournament, all with Edin as Skip. They are a very strong and settled side and can make a serious title challenge out in Edmonton. The question is, can Canada take them down on home soil? With the extra support behind them, they are naturally going to be a big threat and history is on their side.

The Swedes will be looking to make up for a disappointing run last year at the World Championships when they finished sixth in the round robin stage and fell well short of expectations. You would imagine that with the European title under their belt last year, they will be fired up for this one. But then Canada stormed to some impressive form with a W10 L1 record in their matches throughout the tournament last year and you know that they aren’t going to give up much at all this time around in defence of their title. Canada have the chance to get big monument and confidence under their belt as they open against Switzerland on April 1st.

Sweden opens against China and then big show and between Canada and Sweden will happen on April 2nd so you can pencil that one in. After the round robin stage, it is a straight shot in the playoffs. The top two in the league play off and the winner goes straight to the final, while the loser of that will get another chance as they play the winner of the knockout match between the third and fourth placed team.

Curling World Championships Betting 2017 Predictions

There’s some top action to come from Edmonton and things look pretty evenly matched between the top-two ranked sides. We would roll with Canada taking the win in this one because of home support on their side. Sweden choked a bit last year, but of course proved themselves in the European Championships, but they may find the challenge of Canada just too much to handle. Look for Norway and Switzerland to make up the top four.
