Djokovic seeks form in Eastbourne

Tennis Betting

Former world number one Novak Djokovic is putting in a surprise appearance at Eastbourne this week as part of his Wimbledon preparations. It hasn’t been a great season for him, certainly not by his high standards and he hasn’t won a title since the Qatar Open in January. So he is struggling and is looking for a spark as he plays a grass-tournament ahead of Wimbledon for the first time in ten years. It has been a big fall for Djokovic who is now outside of the top two in the world.

We last saw him out at the French Open when he was beaten at Roland Garros in straight sets by Dominic Thiem. It’s remarkable that just last year he held all four of the Major titles, but now he has none, with him having gone W24 L7 this year. He is a three-time Wimbledon champion and will be looking to get something back for the grass court major coming up and whatever happens to him at Eastbourne isn’t going to tell us much.

The sea of talent on the coast isn’t great and despite all of his problems this year, Djokovic is the odds-on favourite at bet365 for the tournament which says it all really. Let’s just say the competition isn’t stiff at all for the Serbians at this event, so this will just be a test of his mental focus more than anything and even if he crashes out early, it changes nothing for him at the moment, so he really has nothing to lose.

He took a late wildcard for this, just to get some grass experience. Djokovic hasn’t won a grass court tournament in his career outside of Wimbledon. Djokovic opens against Vasek Pospisil in the second round and the highest ranked player that he could meet in the semi finals is fifth seed Sam Querrey. The other main players in the draw are all then squashed in the bottom half of the draw, namely Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet, Mischa Zverev and John Isner.

Aegon International Tennis betting odds

Novak Djokovic 4/5, Gael Monfils 9/1, John Isner 11/1, Richard Gasquet 11/1, Kevin Anderson 14/1, Steve Johnson 14/1, Mischa Zverev 18/1, Sam Querrey 16/1, Bernard Tomic 16/1, bar 22/1.

Prediction: Djokovic is probably going to get close to winning this one, but there’s nothing there in the market price to warrant backing him really. Frenchman Richard Gasquet had a good tournament on the grass out in Halle, Germany before losing in a tight semi final duel with Alexander Zverev. He’s solid enough on the grass to take a punt on in the bet365 To Reach Final market or go all in on an each way.
