Respite unlikely for Sri Lanka in ODI series

Rain put paid to England’s hopes of a series whitewash in the Third Test at Lords but that will have delighted regular readers, who should have followed our advice for a 2-0 correct score at 2/1.

An inexperienced Sri Lanka had virtually no chance of an upset against Alastair Cook’s men in the five-day game but will hope to fare better in the ODIs, which get under way on June 21.

Unfortunately, there is a lot going on at present and only one major bookmaker has so far put up odds for the five-match ODI series – England are 1/5 with Ladbrokes, who have the tourists at 7/2.

Farveez Maharoof has earned himself a call up to Sri Lanka’s ODI squad for the clashes between Ireland and England in June and July.

Maharoof has not played an ODI since Sri Lanka faced Bangladesh in Dhaka in March 2012 but has impressed in the Premier Limited Over Tournament in Sri Lanka, finishing as the leading wicket-taker after taking 16 wickets in five matches at an average of 6.31. The all-rounder is part of a group of five players joining the squad for the ODIs. The others are Danushka Gunathilaka,  Seekkuge Prasanna, Suraj Randiv and Upul Tharanga but this is not the same team that beat England by nine wickets in the World Cup last year.

England are also a much different, and stronger, ODI side. There will be no Ben Stokes for this series as he recovers from injury but Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Jason Roy and Joe Root are all now top-class limited overs players and Eoin Morgan’s men should again put the opposition to the sword.

England are 7/4 for a 4-1 correct score series win and 7/2 for a 5-0 series whitewash with Ladbrokes.
