England v Uruguay World Cup 2014, 19th June Betting Preview

No-one ever said it was going to be easy for the Three Lions. After a decent performance, but still a loss, against Italy in their opener, the pressure is on Roy Hodgson’s troops now. Can they respond in fine fashion against the South Americans, who are also looking for their first points after bombing badly against Costa Rica in their opener?

England v Uruguay Betting Tips

That defeat against Italy was the first time since 1986 that England have lost a World Cup opening match. However, they did still make it out of their group back in 1986, so no reason to write them off yet. That having been said, only four of 46 sides to lose their opening group game since 1998 have qualified for the knockout stages. That makes scary reading for England, and they really have to put a win on the board against Uruguay. There are clearly issues therefore England. Defensively they look very shaky and Wayne Rooney is becoming a problem to fit into the side.

What will Roy Hodgson do?

England are winless against Uruguay at the World Cup from two previous meetings. Those were all the way back in 1954 and 1966 though. The last time that England did play Uruguay was in a friendly back at Anfield in 2006, a game which England won 2-1. On the plus side, England have scored in each of their last eight World Cup matches with South American sides and Daniel Sturridge is 6/4 favourite to net at any time in the match, with Rooney at a price of 2/1. Sturridge has three in this last four for his country, while Rooney is goalless in nine World Cup matches for England. Another plus is that England recorded their highest ever World Cup pass completion rate (91%) in their opening game against Italy.

Luis Suarez may be back for this one, a big headache for the England defence. Suarez is 6/4 in the anytime goalscorer market, with Edinson Cavani, who didn’t look all that impressive in their opener, at 9/4. They continued their run of not winning an opening group match since 1970, and they have only managed one win in their second games in their last six World Cup appearances. They will be desperate for three points, as they were all over the place against group outsiders Costa Rica, going down to ten men and getting beaten 3-1. The inconsistencies which plagued them through qualification, mostly at the back, were all there. England don’t have to be that afraid. Uruguay have now picked up a red card in two of their last four games at the World Cup.

England v Uruguay Predictions

Given the respective first matches of both, England were the better side. Uruguay imploded and blew their lines badly. Will Suarez make the difference? England have to be just as bold as they were in the first match and how the odds have shifted, because they are favourites now in the match outright. Just worth shooting for England because of that. Both have big defensive issues so look for Both Teams To Score as well and it will probalby go over 2.5 goals.
