England’s senior women’s football team need a win against Turkey on Thursday, in order to guarantee themselves top spot in their qualifying group and reach the European Play-offs for the 2011 Women’s World Cup. England have been going along nicely in their qualification group, and have only conceded two goals in their six matches so far, scoring 23 at the other end. In their last match against Spain, England needed to enact a comeback to grab a vital draw against the Spanish, after putting in a lacklustre first half performance. But with Spain having finished their group matches and sitting three points clear of England at the top of the group, the path is actually clear now for England to firmly take top spot with their two matches remaining. England take on Turkey on Wednesday, as side which they beat 3-0 away in their second group match, knowing that a win will put them into the play-offs.

Goalkeeper Rachel Brown knows that the business end of the group qualification is at hand now, and that there is no room for complacency. She has been at the very heart of the clean sheets that England have produced so far, making them a strong force in Europe. But Hope Powell’s side will need the same conviction that Brown exudes between the posts, to reach the outfield players and simply get the job done on Thursday. England have looked very good in some of their matches, but to be honest the opposition has not been great, not that that is taking anything away from the England side. They have gotten the jobs done which have been laid in front of them, and now they have played their way to the brink of qualification. All of the eight group winners from the European qualification zone go into a two-leg play off which will produce four teams going forward to the World Cup finals in Germany 2011.

When England met Turkey earlier in the group, they were made to work much harder than the scoreline suggested. England did not produce a thoroughly convincing display, but ran out 3-0 winners all the same. That is probably the sign of a very good team, and they will face the same problems again as they face Turkey. Turkey are an organised side, which like to keep their games very tight, even though their only two victories have come against bottom side Malta in the group. But playing on home advantage, where England are strong, will probably produce a different type of match, even if the scoreline and outcome will, more likely than not, be the same. England will be expecting to win this one quite comfortably, even if the Turkish put up some tough resistance to begin with.

At China 2007, England were knocked out in the semi finals by the USA, and so Hope Powell’s side are keen to make an immediate return and show that they can go further. England will be captained by stalwart Faye White, and the side have quite a potent attacking force with the likes of Eniola Aluko, Jess Clarke and Sue Smith in the ranks. Midfielder Fara Williams, one of England’s stand out players, also weighs in heavily, having score 32 goals in 83 appearances for her country. With the quality of England’s defence and the creativity they have in midfield and attack, there really should not be any whiff of an upset against Turkey. Fully expect the three points to come their way with plenty of goals to cheer about. Australia, Japan, Korea DPR and hosts Germany already have their place at the tournament. England are clear favourites to win this match, so the outright odds aren’t great. Look for good handicap betting which backs England scoring a hatful, or submarkets in the match such as over/under goals, and correct score market.
