The final eight teams are left standing in the UEFA Europa League and the ties for the quarter finals will be played on April 13th and 30th. There is one British interest left in the tournament and that is Manchester United who have landed themselves a draw out in Belgium against Anderlecht. With the surprise fall of Roma in the last round against Lyon, Manchester United have become even stronger favourites at the head of the Europa League betting market. Will Jose Mourinho be able to claim the title for the second time in his career, thereby collecting the only missing major UEFA trophy from Manchester United’s vast collection?

Europa League Quarter Finals Betting Preview

Ajax (NED) v Schalke (GER)
Both of these have won this tournament before so it is a clash of prior champions. Ajax landed their success in the 1992 season, while Schalke went all the way in the 1997 season. It’s fair to say off the bat that there isn’t a great deal of quality around left in the UEFA Europa League this season with some of the big clubs having fallen by the wayside. Ajax have actually won 12 of 14 previous home matches in Europe against German opposition so that’s a pretty strong record that they have going and they are 11/8 at Bet365 to win the first leg which looks some value. Schalke, who are a mid-table Bundesliga side and nothing more have actually had a solid Europa League campaign, getting past the likes of Nice and Monchengladbach. They have lost one of ten games in the competition this season which is the same record as Ajax have. So this tie is likely to be tight, and it will boil down to who will make the most of their respective home advantage. Schalke look the more likely to deliver and are 8/13 to qualify.

Anderlecht (BEL) v Manchester United (ENG)
Well the Belgians got the short straw in the quarter final draw for the UEFA Europa League. They have faced Manchester United six times before and from that they hold a W3 L3 record, which actually includes a 10-0 loss against the Red Devils back in the 1956/57 meetings (their record European defeat). Anderlecht’s record in England is shocking, having been to the country 15 times before and losing thirteen of them (D2). So they are winless on the road in England and with United steadily going through the motions in the competition, the Premier League side are red hot favourites here. The last time they went up against Belgian opposition was in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League play offs and they won that 7-1 on aggregate against Club Brugge. United have kept six clean sheets in ten Europa League games this season and they are 11/5 at Bet365 to win the first leg to nil. They are overwhelming favourites at 1/5 to qualify from this tie.

Celta Vigo (ESP) v Genk (BEL)
This is the first meeting between these two and Celta hold a W0 D2 L0 record from their two previous games against Belgian clubs. The Spaniards have won only half of their ten games in the competitions this season and they have been vulnerable both home and away. However, they have won their last three away games in the competition with clean sheets and that should, at the end of the day, be able to get themselves past Genk in this quarter final tie. This will be Genk’s 16th and 17th matches in the competition this season so they have come a long, long way to get to this stage and they have won seven of their eight home games in this year’s tournament (D1). They have been less convincing on the road so that will probably work against them in this first leg which the Spaniards are 2/5 odds on favourite to win. Celta Vigo will probably be able to open up a big enough lead in this first leg to count the Belgians out of the tie before kick off in the second leg. Genk went to Spain in the group stage and conceded five goals against Athletic Club.

Lyon (FRA) v Be?ikta? (TUR)
This is the first meeting between these two as well and it’s been a long time since Lyon faced Turkish opposition. Not since Champions League group stage matches against Fenerbahce in the 2004/05 season have they faced anyone from Turkey. Lyon pulled off an upset in the land round by seeing off the major threat of Roma and that has seen the price on the French outfit winning the tournament, cut. Suddenly because of that, they look more of a threat and with Besiktas having lost all three of their previous trips to France, Lyon have fired off sixteen goals in ehir four Europa League games this season including a five goal haul on aggregate over Roma. It is unlikely that Besiktas, who have no clean sheet in ten European games this season are going to keep the French side at bay. That having been said, they did land a win out at Napoli in the group stage of this season’s Champions League, but that was their only win in six games. Look for entertaining games to come out of this, but Lyon are justifiable 2/5 odds on favourites to qualify with Bet365 and there is plenty of meat on the bone at 15/8 on Lyon to win and both teams to score in the first leg.
