It may be the Drivers’ Championship which attracts most interest in F1, and nearly all the glamour, but future funding comes via a successful constructor and the dominant force in recent years has been Mercedes.

It is seven years since the Silver Arrows returned to Formula One but what a comeback it has been! It took five years for Mercedes to finally topple Red Bull but they’ve adapted best to the ever-changing regulations and demands of F1 in the last three years and are only a best 5/11 with Bwin to win a fourth Constructors’ Championship in a row in 2017.

However, even Lewis Hamilton has described Ferrari’s testing as ‘spectacular’ and there is speculation that the Prancing Horse could mount a serious challenge this year. It certainly shouldn’t be the normal procession with Kimi Raikonnen believing the Italian giant is in a much stronger position than 12 months ago. Ferrari are a general 4/1 and look more of a threat to Mercedes’ dominance than Red Bull. Though, a note of caution, the Scuderia were strongest in testing before last season and failed to win a single race.

Red Bull have been well off the pace in pre-season testing and team chiefs are admitting that their new car will not be the finished article before the campaign gets under way in Melbourne. Questions continue to be asked of Renault’s engines but while Red Bull seem to be muddling through, pre-season has been a disaster for Toro Rosso.

Big problems, too, for McLaren. Their Honda engines have been trying to shake themselves loose from the McLaren chassis and are continually mis-firing. Fernando Alonso is said to be at the end of his tether having completed fewer laps than anyone else. The Spaniard’s contract is up at the end of the season and he is most unlikely to look for an extension unless there is a rapid turnaround. There is a rumour that McLaren may even sever ties with Honda, even though they are contracted to 2024, though that is a scenario that would do neither any favours.
