This is it, the culmination of the FedExCup play-offs. This is the sixth edition of the FedExCup, hosted by Coca-Cola. The final thirty are in Atlanta at the East Lake Golf club. The course is a par 70 which goes over 7,319 yards. It should be a very good level playing field to settle the outcome of the 2012 FedExCup on, and the biggest challenges will probably come with the putter. Players won’t be punished too badly for any drives which fail to stick on the fairway, however, for the players who can stick the fairways consistently, it will make for a much more solid tee-to-green golf round which the tournament demands. It is consistency and steadiness which should prevail here, getting to the greens shouldn’t be a large problem for the quality that is in the field, the player with the hottest putter at the end of the day should edge this. There will be little advantage gained elsewhere.
The Scenario
Five men have their fates in their own hands heading to East Lake this week. The Top Five in the points standings reads as 1) Rory McIlroy, 2) Tiger Woods, 3) Nick Watney, 4) Phil Mickelson, 5) Brandt Snedeker. If any of those five win the event, then they will be the FedExCup champion, regardless of what happens in the rest of the field. Rory McIlroy has a reasonable chance of winning the title as long as he finishes in the top five, while Tiger Woods has a reasonable shot if he makes a top three finish. The other players mentioned really need a win or a top two finish to stand a reasonable chance. For the players outside of the top five, they need a win and for the players above them to finish low enough to steal in for the FedExCup victory.

Bill Haas is the reigning FedExCup holder, but he won’t be retaining it. The American slipped just outside the top 30 after the BMW, coming in at 32 following a lowly T45 when he needed better. So there are only two previous FedExCup winners remaining in the field for East Lake this week. That is Tiger Woods (a two time FedExCup winner) and Jim Furyk who took the tile in 2010.

Rory McIlroy. For the first time in the FedExCup play offs this season, there is a clear division in the betting odds between McIlroy and Tiger Woods. For the previous three play off fixtures, there were pretty much neck and neck as joint favourites ahead of the tee off, but what McIlroy has produced has been phenomenal. He scored back to back victories in the Deutsche Bank and the BMW Championship to rocket to the top of the FedExCup points standings That also equated to three wins in his last four starts now and he is in blistering form. This is the first time that he has ever played at East Lake before though. But his driver is swinging so sweetly at the moment, he is not going to be far from the winners circle surely. McIlroy leads the PGA in birdie average and adjusted scoring. McIlroy is trading as 9/2 favourite at online bookmaker Bet365.
Other Contenders
Unlike Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods knows East Lake well. Will that give him the advantage that he needs. He won in 2007 and has finished runner up at the course four other times before. Has had two T4 finishes in the FedExCup play offs this season and sitting sixth in total driving, it shows how well he playing at the moment. Goes in the FexExCup Tour Championship second in the points standings behind McIlroy. The question to really consider is can Rory McIlroy win three tournaments in a row, or will Woods’ track record at East Lake fire him to the top?
Phil Mickelson played his way into the spotlight again in the FedExCup play offs after clinching a T4 and a T2 at the BMW Championship last time out. He looked a totally different player to what we saw over the past couple of months and he has course history at East Lake as well. He has won twice there, once in 2000 and once in 2009. He has vast experience and is one of only three players to ever qualify for each of the FedExCup Tour Championships. Goes in fourth in the points standings and a change of grip on the putter has seen him really excel on the greens. Could be the man to oust Woods and McIlroy here.
Dustin Johnson is sat outside of the top five but is in tremendous form. A seasoned FedExCup play off player, with play off wins in each of the past two seasons, he has been the epitome of consistency in this season’s play offs. He has landed a T3, T4 and T6 so far and if anyone looks likely to break through the advantage that the top five in the points standings has, then it will be the American. Will have to keep an eye on him but his track record in three appearances at East Lake has failed to produce a top twenty finish.
Lee Westwood. It has been a pretty solid FedExCup challenge from the Englishman. He has notched up three straight top fifteen finishes, but he hasn’t been able to work his way higher than eighth in the standings. What will work against him is that it is also his first time at East lake as well, and against the experience that Woods and Mickelson have here, it could could against Westwood. But he is playing very, very well at the moment.
A star-studded field all the way when you don’t even get to mention the likes of Jim Furyk, Jason Dufner, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Keegan Bradley and others. It should be a tremendous weekend of golf.
Best Outside Bet
Luke Donald maybe on the boil and worth looking at. He is back down in 15th in the FedExCup points standings and he hasn’t managed a top twenty five in the Deutsche Bank or the BMW. However, he does have some course history which should play him into favour. He was runner up here in 2010 and he was tied for third here last season. Going well with the putter at the moment and a win here on a course like this should not be too far out of the picture for him. Donald is trading at a price of 18/1 with online bookmaker Bet365.
