The new season of Formula 1 will bring some changes for fans and bettors to wrap their heads around. There are some big rule changes now and they are the most radical ones as a whole since 2014 when the sport started to use hybrid power units. For the new season, the changes include the cars being faster, with the premise of shaving off up to five second per lap on average and the vehicles will be faster and be carrying more downforce. Formula 1 has been running on very thin, narrow margins to make a difference for the competitors, but now the changes are significant and the teams have to really shake things up and look for big margins.

When the hybrid power units came in for the 2014 season, there was one clear benefactor of the rule changes and that was Mercedes. They were far more prepared technically than every other team to implement the new technology and they haven’t looked back since, with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg sweeping the three titles up for grabs following the 2014 changes. Those changes snapped the dominance of Sebastian Vettel in his Red Bull and the four-time champion became anonymous because of the team being unable to keep up with the Mercedes drivers. It wasn’t even close over the ensuing three years.

But for the 2017 Formula 1 season, the Red Bull team could find themselves back on top having drafted in the rising star of the entire show, Max Verstappen to team up with Daniel Ricciardo. With the late unveiling of their new FB13 car, it wasn’t the greatest of starts to testing in Barcelona for them as they hit some reliability issues. Of course this is what testing is for, ironing out the wrinkles and there has been a lot of hype about Red Bull that they are going to be in the position where Mercedes were three years ago, ready to take the new changes by the scruff of the neck.

Along with the new speeds of the cars, you have extra demand on the drivers because of it. Reining world champion Nico Rosberg has retired from the sport, so he’s not around to defend. Did he know that Mercedes weren’t going be at the races this season in terms of competitiveness and that he didn’t really have a chance to defend the title? It’s a theory, but it’s unreasonable to assume that he couldn’t have booked a drive at one of the front running teams. Lewis Hamilton is 11/10 favourite in the Formula 1 Drivers Championship Betting 2017 Winner Odds at Coral, followed by Red Bull’s Verstappen at 7/2.

Because of the changes things are wide open though and it should be a thrilling competitive season to see how the new cars stand up, and who wins the battle of the fittest driver too. We only have a short wait until the end of March to see the new season line up on the grid. But there is plenty of interest in the practices during the pre-season so watch those carefully to try and pick up some hints. Here we take a look at the 2017 F1 season from a betting perspective.

Formula 1 Drivers Championship Prediction

So will we see Lewis Hamilton run unchallenged to the Formula 1 Drivers Championship title this year? At a price of 11/10 to win outright he’s actually worth opposing. He is immense in terms of grit, pushing the limits of speed and of course, his physical endurance and he will probably thrive and enjoy himself even more in the quicker cars. But there are enough whispers coming out of the petrol-head followers of F1 to suggest that there are other teams who are coming to the fore this year and that will predominately be the Red Bull team. Williams could have  decent run of things as well. Then you will be looking to the input from the Ferrari for Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.

With Rosberg gone, the only active former F1 Champions running are Fernando Alonso, Raikkonen, Hamilton and Vettel. But if you look at the outright winner market in Formula 1 Drivers Championship betting then Hamilton is the only of those in single figures to go and land the title. That sets him apart from the field and apart from value as well. Vettel made a decent start to 2017 practice, but then he did last season and failed to win a single race as the Ferrari’s couldn’t keep pace. So it is worth skipping over them unless you have a big each way flutter on 14/1 shot Vettel to rise back to the top, but that doesn’t scream as being a particularly worthwhile avenue to go down.

Valtteri Bottas has some pressure on him coming into Mercedes to replace Rosberg of course, but he is likely to place second fiddle by a substantial margin to Hamilton and can’t seriously be backed to storm his way to the title this season. So really you just can’t help coming all the way back to the challenge of the two Red Bull drivers, Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen to rip the title away from Hamilton. You would have to look at the outright odds of Mercedes driver Bottas and question why he is a shorter option if the Mercedes team is going to be dominant this season.

Again, going back to the Red Bull challenge, both for their drivers are shorter priced that Bottas in the Formula 1 Drivers Championship Betting 2017 odds at Coral and that says a lot. Ricciardo took one win last season coming home first in Malaysia and that matched Verstappen’s epic win in Spain earlier in the season. Ricciardo, who was driving with Verstappen last year for Red Bull, collected 52 points more than Verstappen did across the course of the season and never collected a single retirement. Out of the two drivers, he is likely to have the steadier hand in controlling the new beasts and at a 9/2 price at Coral in Formula 1 Drivers Championship Betting 2017, he rolls as our tip. It is a little outside of the box with the major focus on Hamilton and Verstappen, but this is a season of new machines, new rules so think outside of the box.

Formula 1 Constructors Championship Prediction

There is massive value on Red Bull at 7/4 Coral second favourites in this one to win the Constructors’ Championship. With their two young drivers likely to push very hard for a lot of podium finishes this season, there is a great potential in the team collecting the title this go around. Certainly Mercedes at an odds-on price of 8/15 aren’t any value at all to throw money at, because it may just be Hamilton running on his own and most talk around the garages seem to be of the vein that Red Bull are the ones to be most scared of this season. Run with that and back them to win their first since 2013.
