France v Ireland Betting Tips

Will the French, who impressed so many in their build up to the tournament, actually show up now it is the knockout stage of the competition? They were a little below par during their group stage matches, never hitting their best level in wins over Romania, Albania and a draw against Switzerland. But still, they won their group, thanks to some individual qualities that they had and because of the strength in depth that they have at their disposal, that is going to be a huge benefit in tight knockout stage matches. France are in great form having won eleven of their last thirteen games played (D1 L1) and there is much better to come from the. They are unbeaten in their last four games against Ireland and if they start clicking here, then they may still take some stopping in the tournament.

The last time that France and Ireland met up there was big controversy. It was the World Cup 2010 qualifying play offs and Thierry Henry netted that ‘handball’ goal which should never have stood and Ireland failed to make it to the World Cup. So they Irish may still have that in mind as they go out for revenge. However, Ireland can’t match the firepower that France have at their disposal, starting with Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann who are 8/5 and 7/4 in the anytime goalscorer market respectively. Then you have other great options in Dimitri Payet, Andre-Pierre Gignac, Anthony Martial, Kingsley Coman and Paul Pogba at a quote 2/1 price. France only conceded the one goal in the group stage, that being from the penalty spot against Romania. Under 2.5 goals against Ireland is a 1/2 option and that looks likely, while you could go with France to win to nil at 5/6.

Hats off to Ireland, whose endeavour finally got them across the finish line and into the knockout stage. That was courtesy of a late winner from Robbie Brady in a game they had to win to get through. That was against an understrength Italy side though and Ireland did a lot of work in that game. They will play their round of sixteen game just four days after that, whereas France have had a good week’s rest. So there may be a bit of tiredness in the Irish legs who haven’t got the squad to go rotating players too much. Ireland took a W1 D1 L1 record from the group stage and they have recorded just the one win in their last six matches (D3 L2). This is a tough game for them and the longer this one wears on, the more that the Irish defensive frailties of the Irish may come into play. It may be worth a draw/half time/full time flutter because the Irish will dig into start with.

France v Ireland Betting Odds

France 4/9, Draw 16/5, Ireland 10/1.

France v Ireland Predictions

France will probably have too much in the tank for the Irish. France have the quality options off hit their potential of top gear early in the game then they are likely to take a comfortable win though. If Ireland dig in, then it may need more patience from them. It’s worth looking under 2.5 goals for sure and France to win this one to nil.
