Gareth Southgate favourite in Next England Manager betting

England hunt for Hodgson replacement

Football Betting

England’s troubles may just be starting following their shock exit from Euro 2016. With Roy Hodgson stepping down from his managerial role, the FA now have a tough task of trying to find someone to replace him. However, the list of candidates that jumped to the fore of punters minds immediately after Hodgson’s resignation, was a bit uninspiring to say the least.

Gareth Southgate was immediately placed into a position of favouritism at online betting site Sky Bet. The England Under 21 manager has worked with the English set up therefore of course and would be a familiar face. But this is a big step up for him and this is walking into some high pressure.

Gary Neville’s name has been touted around as well, and the former Manchester United man is a 10/1 shot alongside Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew. The issue for England is that they now need not only a strong candidate to really shake things up, but they need someone who understands and is prepared to work with the strengths of the English players. A lot of England’s failings at Euro 2016 was put down to Hodgdon not knowing what his best side and setup was and didn’t play to strengths of a lot his players.

So whoever the man is that they bring in, he is going to have pick the country up off its knees and that will take someone strong, someone prepared to shake the ship a little bit after conservative spells from Fabio Capello and Hodgson. But where can England find that man? Jose Mourinho is now in a job with Manchester United and is a 33/1 punt to bypass that and join England, while Arsene Wenger is a 28/1 shot. Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe and Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is a 16/1 punt.

The man to do it may be Alan Shearer, who went for the job before Hodgson did. Sharecare is 6/1 to get the job. The TV pundit is someone who could get the dressing room fired up, and would bring a bit of passion to the sidelines no doubt. Shearer is a straight shooter and isn’t afraid to mix his words and that humble, truthful approach could be just what England need, but of course, he hasn’t the managerial experience to take into it.

Maybe they will be a little braver, with home grown options looking a bit thin on the ground and follow in the footsteps of England’s rugby team who have installed Australian Eddie Jones as manager and reaped immediate benefits from that. The top options there would probably be Jurgen Klinsmann, current USA boss at 25/1, while Laurent Blanc has just left PSG and could be a coup at 28/1 odds. Or there is the ever popular Guus Hiddink as well at 33/1 or a great capture for them could be prying Slaven Bilic away from West Ham at 28/1.
