Germany v Greece Euro 2012 odds at Paddy Power
Germany 1/3, Draw 4/1, Greece 10/1

Little doubt about who is the strong favourite in this one. Germany were the only team to pick up maximum points from the group stage, so three front three and probably not quite hitting top gear, isn’t bad. Joachim Low has promised that there is more to come, but we saw the best of them in their application and execution against the Netherlands in the Group of Death. The Germans have had to show a defensive grit at times, and some resiliency. They conceded an equaliser to a plucky Danish side, and dug deep to claw their way back to a victory in their final group match there. We have seen different sides to Germany, good discipline and of course, their flowing attacking power. It hasn’t all been about the power and pace of the young German side, there has been a great balance in the side and their tactics, which is just showing them as an all-round complete side, arguably the best in the tournament. They could not be better primed for a run at the European Championship title here and of course, a rematch of the 2008 Final against Spain is still on the cards.

Germany look as if they can just deliver, whatever the circumstances. They have an immense midfield, which is the backbone of their team, with the engine room of Schweinsteiger and Khedira accentuating the creativity of Mesut Ozil. Germany have never ever lost a quarter final match at the Euro’s and this will be their fifth crack at at one. Germany have not squared up to the Greeks since the qualifying stage for 2002 World Cup, and both meetings there were won comfortably by the Germans. The Germans look a very slick side and with the tactical nous of the coach, and the options available off the bench to change things up if necessary, really puts them at the head of the pack. They more of a team than they even did at the 2010 World Cup when they impressed so much. Some of the out-right blistering attack may have been toned down a little bit in order to instil more defensive discipline, but the question is, how are Greece going to outscore the Germans?

Interstingly, Greece have never lost a quarter final at the Euros. Granted, they have only played one, against France on their way to causing a huge surprise by winning Euro 2012. If you are looking for any indications that Greece may spring a surprise, then in all three of their comings-together at the continental finals, Greece have managed to pick up a draw. So are they in a position to spring another big surprise? Well, if the Greeks got through this, then it would be the biggest surprise of the tournament so far. Greece are known for their stubborn resistance, largely being a defensive team which rely on a lot of long, high balls forward to unsettle the back line of their opponents. Tactically, they haven’t been their usual sound self at the back, and they looked a little unprepared for the tournament. Have Greece overachieved already? They did tame the Russians, winning 1-0 against the Group A favourites, a win which put the Greeks through to face Germany. They have shown time and time again, they can get themselves out of tight spots. This is probably too great of an ask though.

Germany v Greece Prediction: Germany are the strong option here, there is little doubt about that. If Greece concede first then there just doesn’t look to be a way back for them based on what we have seen. So their best bet will be trying to hold out, but that is not going to be easy against a confidence German side. Still, Greece will make it difficult, but it may be worth a Germany 2-0 Correct Score for 5/1 at Paddy Power with their Money Back Special in place.
