Germany v Portugal World Cup 2014, 16th June Betting Preview
This is the big clash of Group G at the World Cup. Not only is a duel between two of Europe’s heavyweights, but it is also likely to turn out to be the decider for top spot in the group. That is the weight of importance riding on this big opener, and history suggests that it will be favourites Germany who will banking the three points on offer.

Germany v Portugal Betting Tips

Joachim Low’s men are unbeaten in their last six matches, so their current form is pretty handy. It wasn’t a tour de force from them in their friendly matches used as warm ups for the World Cup though, because they were held to draws against Poland and Cameroon. However, a 6-1 win over Armenia directly ahead of the World Cup saw them put that behind them. Germany hold a big 9-3 head to head lead over Portugal and that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to looking at how the stats stack up in their favour for this one.

Just one of their last 18 matches in the group stage of the World Cup have Germany lost, and they have posted wins in 13 of those. So they are superbly efficient in getting the job done in the first round and as well as that, they have posted victories in each of their last six opening World Cup matches too. With them having lost just three of their last 17 international matches against Portugal, then there is just value in backing them outright for the win here. They are perhaps lacking a genuine number nine, one of youth anyway, as they will look to veteran Miroslav Klose, who is 6/5 in the anytime goalscorer market to provide the goals. He needs just one more goal to equal Ronaldo’s tally of 15 at World Cup. The strength of Germany’s attack though is really their superb midfield options, although they are without Marco Reus.

Little surprise whose shoulders the hopes of Portugal are resting on. The substantial shoulders of Cristiano Ronaldo who is trading as even money favourite in the anytime goalscorer market. He only has two World Cup goals though to his name, and that is from 48 shots at the World Cup finals. Portugal are in decent form, having only lost one of their last 13 matches, and that defeat was excusable as it was against Brazil last year in a friendly. They are a resilient side and while they were missing Ronaldo’s influence during their warm ups, they closed out with victories over Mexico and Ireland.

The Portuguese have only won one of their last seven World Cup matches, which was a 7-0 win over North Korea at South Africa 2010. Given the fact that they have only taken three wins in their last 17 international matches against Germany, and have lost their last three against the Germans in major tournaments, they are going to be underdogs for this one. But what can Ronaldo do for his country?

Germany v Portugal Predictions

There is enough in the stats to suggest that Germany are going to get a win on the board. They have a far better all round squad than Portugal do and have more attacking options. Germany aren’t that tight at the back and it could be worth looking over 2.5 goals. But there is decent value in just getting behind Germany to keep their winning streak over Portugal in major tournaments going.
