Golden Globes 2017 Betting Preview & Winner Odds

La La Land for Globes dominance

Novelty Betting & Other Events Betting

On January 8th, the 74th Golden Globe Awards will be held from Beverly Hills, California. Late night show host and comedian Jimmy Fallon is the host of the proceedings and the entire thing is run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is as the name suggests, is a group of around 90 foreign journalists, which makes the voting pretty varied and a world away from that of the Oscars.

Still, the Golden Globes are often seen as the precursor to the Oscars which happen at the end of February. So who will be walking off with awards? The final nominations are in and we take a look at the main Golden Globes 2017 Betting markets.

Best Picture – Drama

Manchester by the Sea 11/10, Moonlight 5/4, Hacksaw Ridge 12/1, Lion 20/1, Hell or High Water 25/1

This market is actually quite open and a toss up between Manchester by the Sea, starring Casey Affleck as a depressed janitor who goes home to retire in Boston and Moonlight, which is the nearest challenge and has been highly acclaimed. Moonlight is a movie about a gay black man who is going through different stages of his life. None of the nominees have really been big blockbusters, but there probably been a little more buzz around Manchester and the HFPA has previously had a bit of a leaning towards that. The outside shot would be Mel Gibson’s war drama Hacksaw Ridge. It’s not been lauded anywhere near the amount that the other two have been.

Best Picture Musical/Comedy

La La Land 1/19, 20th Century Women 14/1, Deadpool 33/1, Florence Foster Jenkins 40/1, Sing Street 40/1

This is a lock really. La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone will wrap up the title with consummate ease and power on to claiming more success at the Oscars. The movie is about a jazz pianist and a wannabe actor (Stone). The director is Damien Chazelle, so worth doubling up with him landing the Best Director trophy ahead of Manchester by the Sea’s Kenneth Lonergan. The movie opened in the US last December and got off to a cracking start with how much it pulled in. It’s going big places and none of the other nominees in this category are going to get close for one reason or another, such as a Deadpool being too in-your-face or 20th Century Women being frankly, too cool for its own good.

Best Director

Damien Chazelle 6/17, Kenneth Lonergan 8/1, Barry Jenkins 9/1, Tom Ford 33/1, Mel Gibson 501

The only way that this market is going to get upset is if Barry Jenkins gets the nod for Moonlight. But that’s highly unlikely under the weight of the presence of Damien Chazelle. With his move La La Land a lock for the Best Picture Musical/Comedy award, it’s only natural that he will get his hands on the title. But why not Lonergan for Manchester by the Sea you ask? If the two movies were together in one category, La La Land would still blitz it.

Best Actor – Drama

Casey Affleck 1/2, Denzel Washington 10/3, Andrew Garfield 1/1, Joel Edgerton 16/1, Viggo Mortensen 20/1

But where Manchester by the Sea can strike is in the individual awards. Manchester by the Sea is a bleak and harrowing movie, but it is packed with pain, suspense, and emotion which Affleck carries off brilliantly. His brooding portrayal of main character Lee Chandler, a handyman loner, is really on point and he should steam away with the title. There’s not anyone in this category that is going to get close to him. As big of a banker really on the night as La La Land is.

Best Actress – Drama

Natalie Portman 1/5, Amy Adams 8/1, Isabelle Huppert 8/1, Ruth Negga 16/1, Jessica Chastain 25/1

This could be a great Oscars warm up for Natalie Portman here for the performance as Jacqueline Kennedy. The biopic “Jackie” isn’t actually as good as Portman’s acting in it. She carries the weight of the movie and delivers a stand out performance. It’s going to take some stopping keeping her off the winner’s podium, but there is a serious challenge coming in from Amy Adams for her showing in “Arrival” when she plays a role in commencing with Aliens which have landed on earth. If she lands the Globes award here that would blow the Oscars market wide open. Actually, Ruth Negga could be a bit shorter in the market for her role as half of a persecuted interracial couple in the 1960’s.

Best Actor – Musical/Comedy

Ryan Gosling 1/12, Jonah Hill 5/1, Colin Farrell 12/1, Hugh Grant 12/1, Ryan Reynolds 25/1

Remarkably the other Ryan (Reynolds) is the rank outsider here, but he arguably played the best comedy role out of all these nominees. But because of the presence of La La Land, the title is likely going to Gosling instead. If Gosling doesn’t win this for his underplayed study of a jazz-crazed pianist, then La La Land will have tanked badly overall.

Best Actress – Musical/Comedy

Emma Stone 1/7, Annette Bening 15/4, Meryl Streep 15/2, Hailee Steinfeld 25/1, Lily Collins 40/1

Emma Stone really isn’t going up against too much competition in his one despite taking on former two-time winners Bening and Streep. They are legends in their own rights, but the juggernaut that is the gorgeous La La Land is just likely to keep rolling on and sweeping up the awards. This, through and through is just going to be a win for Stone.
