The Hennessy Gold Cup Chase is celebrating its 60th birthday this weekend and what a history it can boast!

Hennessy Gold Cup Chase History and Trends

The most important race of its kind in the UK in the first half of the National Hunt season, the Hennessy Gold Cup was first staged at Cheltenham in 1957. It moved to Newbury in 1960 and has been at the Berkshire course ever since. Jumping superstars Mandarin, Arkle and Denman are the only horses to have won the race more than once but Smad Place is bidding to join that illustrious list this year.
Contested over three miles and two-and-a-half furlongs, it’s a true test of jumping ability and staying power and is a genuine trial for the Grand National next April – Many Clouds did the double in 2014/15. Bob’s Worth won the Hennessy in 2012 and went on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following spring and this year’s renewal looks well up to standard.
As well as Smad Place, the 2013 winner Triolo D’Alene is trying his luck again but all of the last four winners have carried at least 11st 1lb – only four of this year’s field fall into that category.
Apart from Denman in 2009, no winner since the turn of the century has been aged older than nine but there are no trends regarding starting price, though only one of the last seven winners has been bigger than 10/1. Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson have both trained the winner three times since 2002.

NATIVE RIVER is a best 11/2 with Skybet among others and looks to have everything in his favour. His trainer Colin Tizzard also has last year’s second Theatre Guide in the line-up but the six-year-old is his best hope of a first success in the race. He ran in all the top novice races last season and showed steady improvement, culminating in a defeat of Henri Parry Morgan and Un Temps Pour Tout in a Grade 1 at Aintree in April after finishing second in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham when ahead of Vicente and Local Show.

His form ties in closely with that of Blaklion (17/2 with 888sport) but Native River has the greater scope and Skybet give all their new customers a £10 free bet. To get it, simply register with Skybet . No deposit needed!

The 40/1 with 888sport about Upswing could be interesting for each-way purposes if the going turned really soft while Vyta Du Roc looks the pick of the Henderson trio, though appears to have something to find on the form book with Un Temps Pour Tout and Vicente.
