Federer and Bencic to land Cup success

Tennis Betting

The new season of tennis is underway and running through to January 7th is the Hopman cup and this is just one of those unusual features of the calendar year as it pits countries against each other as opposed to individuals. This is the 29th edition of the tournament and the event consists of eight national sides split over two round robin groups in the first stage. Each team is represented by two players and this generally in the past has only had British interest because of Andy Murray taking part, generally with Heather Watson.

However, Murray has bypassed this one this year and Watson is joined instead by Dan Evans for the contest. Great Britain are heavy underdogs at a price of 33/1 with Betfair to go and land the title. The reigning champions are Australia with Jarmila Wolfe and Lleyton Hewitt claiming the title last season. Even without Murray going in this year’s event, the interest has been raised with Roger Federer making his first appearance since 2002 as he teams up with Belinda Bencic for Switzerland.

Interestingly for the mixed doubles matches at the Hopman Cup 2017 the Fast 4 rule will be implemented. This is kind of the Twenty20 of cricket equivalent and it has been designed to be a faster alternative with four points, four games and just four rules such as lets being played and no advantage scores in the match. This is a format which has been trialled since back in 2014 but this is the first time that an official tournament has adopted it.

Hopman Cup 2017 Info

The United States are the most successful nation in the history the Hopman Cup having won it six times before as well as having finished runners-up five times. Spain are the second most successful nation with four titles. As for Great Britain, they are still waiting to land their first ever Hopman Cup title, the closest they ever came to doing that was back in 2010 when they finished as runners-up to Spain. Up for the USA this year is Coco Vandeweghe and Jack Sock, not a bad combination but who could turn out to be let down by inconsistencies in their respective games.

With presence of the experienced Roger Federer in the Swiss team, along with the exciting enterprise of Bencic, the Swiss are clear favourites in this one and they demolished Great Britain 3-0 to start their campaign with. Australia’s Nick Kyrgios is the highest ranked male on the ATP taking part in the contest and with his partner Daria Gavrilova the highest ranked female on the WTA Tour who is taking part in the Hopman Cup 2017 then the Aussies would have been fancied, but they fell to a bit of a shock defeat against Spain to open their round robin stage with. So they have some fighting back to do, not easy as they have to take on the USA.

So that hast just added weight to Switzerland’s favouritism in this one. The best clangers behind them are France, who were unfortunate enough to land in the same group as Switzerland though, and all that happens in the Hopman Cup is the two group winners meet in the Final match. The team of Richard Gasquet and Kristina Mladenovic are solid enough to grind their way through matches as they did in their opening win against Germany, but could fall short against the Swiss. The USA who opened their account in Perth with a 3-0 win over the Czech Republic (who aren’t as strong as they could be with the absence of Petra Kvitova) should comfortably land themselves a place in the final from Group B.

Hopman Cup 2017 Predictions

The Swiss are going to take some stopping. Belinda Bencic on her day can take down any of the other female competitors in the mix and then of course, the steady hand of Roger Federer, who is going to be looking to get his return to the game off to a positive start, just makes them tremendously dangerous. It is hard to see anyone taking them down in the long run here but the ones who are likely to get closest to them is going to be the USA.
