Mumbai Indians to deny Challengers?

Cricket Betting

The new season of the thrilling IPL gets underway on Wednesday, April 5th with the opening match between the Hyderabad Sunrisers and the Royal Challengers Bangalore raising the curtain on the new season. The IPL player auction is in the bag and that has left the Royal Challengers Bangalore as the outright favourites at a price of 7/2 with Coral to claim this year’s title. The IPL is a Twenty20 event contested by franchise teams. The money which has been thrown at the tournament has made it the most attended cricket league in the world.

It attracts players from all over for the fast-paced action across India, and each of the eight teams plays each other twice in a round-robin and then the top four from that go forward to the play-offs. The top two finishers in the league play each other with the winner going through to the final. The loser of that game will play the winner of the match between the third and fourth placed teams in the league to see who makes it through to the final where the winner there will be crowned the IPL champions.

It is probably the auction of players which has really hyped up the IPL action. There is an annual action where players are signed and traded and there can only be 10 foreign players in an IPL squad and just four in a match day eleven. There is a salary cap on this which helps to keep the playing field somewhat level and each franchise importantly too must have 6 under 22 players in their squad as well. So with such big contracts tossed around, the best players descend in the world descend on India for a big payday.

IPL Cricket Betting 2017 Betting Preview

Royal Challengers Bangalore 7/2
The Royal Challengers Bangalore finished runners-up last year but they have added England’s T20 specialist Tymal Mills to their ranks. They have been heavily backed to win this year’s tournament and they have some quality players around like AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Shane Watson and Virat Kohli who have all been retained. They are strong in all departments and have been cut down in price after the IPL Auction. They may take some stopping as they go in search of their first ever title. They have been the bridesmaid three times before in the final, but never the bride. They’re usually favourites and have yet to deliver.

Mumbai Indians 5/1 at Coral
If there is one team in the IPL this season who can genuinely oppose the Royal Challengers, then it is the Indians. They have balance in abundance throughout their squad and their bowlers have a lot more nous on the surface of things than Bangalore do. They were shockingly bad with the bad last season which saw them fail to make it past the round-robin stage, but they have a wealth of experience and the batting power is there if they can put it together. They have a better bowling attack than the outright favourites do, including bringing in Mitchell Johnson which could be a game changer.

Hyderabad Sunrisers 11/2
The Sunrisers are the reigning champions in the IPL and they came from nowhere really last season because they won the whole thing without an international-level spinner in their ranks. Because of their success last season, they didn’t bother picking one up for this season’s tournament in the auction either. They have a massive pace bowling attack including Mustafizur and Bhuv Kumar, it’s a big ask for any team to win this whole thing back to back and they aren’t as strong in the batting as they were last term.

Rising Pune Supergiants 11/2
The Supergiants finished second from bottom in last season’s IPL round robin stage. They gambled massively in the IPL auction, throwing a record-breaking sum of money at England all-rounder Ben Stokes. However, they probably needed to spread that £1.7m around a little better because while they are stacked with spin talent, they are lacking the pace bowling department which will probably mean that they are going to do much rising this season. It could be a tricky season for Steve Smith as skipper having taken over from MS Dhoni.

Gujarat Lions 6/1
The Lions are our dark horses for a run at the title this season. They have a lot of energy in their squad and they have some firepower at the top of the order in Brendon McCullum, Jason Roy and Aaron Finch and AJ Tye could squeeze his way into action as well to add to that. They finished third in the league last season and with the addition of Roy through the Auction and arguably the most competitive squad in the whole IPL, they could go places this season.

Kolkata Knight Riders 15/2
The Knight Riders are pretty comparative in balance to what the Mumbai Indians have in their ranks. The only difference between the two, the Knight Riders have a younger bowling line up compared to the experienced ageing troops of the Indians. They have a decent amount of depth in this one and they have been crowned IPL Champions twice before and if Chris Lynn turns up in the big bullish mood then they could be very competitive.

Delhi Daredevils 8/1
Arguably the Daredevils have the most uninspiring side in the IPL this year and disruptions are likely to make it worse for them. JP Duminy has quite and they have a major injury issue with Quinton de Kock. The Daredevils would have lost them though for South Africa’s tour of England ahead of the play-off stage anyway. There really just isn’t the depth around from them to make any kind of challenge this season.

Kings XI Punjab 8/1
There you have the Kings XI Punjab who have managed to win just seven of their 28 games in the IPL in the last couple of years. They badly need a spark of inspiration from somewhere and they could look to their Aussies in Shaun Marsh and Marcus Stoinis to give them that. Eoin Morgan was brought in through the auction and they added a bunch more, but can they play together as a team? There’s a big job ahead for skipper Glenn Maxwell to pull all of this together.

IPL Cricket Betting 2017 Betting Predictions

Our outright favourites for this season’s IPL is going to be the Mumbai Indians. The Royal Challengers Bangalore have choked before and the steady, experienced hands that the Indians have could get them to the title. They have arguably the most balanced squad of all and they can deliver the goods. The raucous Gujarat Lions could make a big impact this season because they can throw tremendous energy at the whole thing and they have some heavy, heavy hitters.
