The Ladbrokes World Grand Prix runs from February 6th to 12th and features the top 32 players sorted through a ranking list which has run throughout this season. But the final line-up will not be decided until the German Masters is completed this weekend in similar fashion to how the line-up is determined in golf’s FedEx Cup. Murphy, incidentally, has never successfully defended a ranking title in 19 previous attempts. Bingham hasn’t won a major tournament since successful in the 2015 World Championship but is still ranked only behind Mark Selby – Judd Trump, arguably the most consistent potter on the tour this season, and John Higgins complete the top four.
Ronnie O’Sullivan will probably be market leader again but suffered a surprise first-round loss in Llandudno 12 months ago. The Rocket also suffered heartache in 2015 when losing in the final to Judd Trump.
