Watson and Willett make most appeal in historic Olympic tournament

Olympics

It takes a big tournament to grab the golf headlines ahead of a scheduled US PGA Tour event but this week’s Olympic Golf competition has enough top players in action to have done just that.

It is 112 years since a full-blown strokeplay event formed part of the Summer Olympics and you would think that a chance to be part of history would have been enough to entice the world’s best to Rio. Unfortunately, that’s not been the case. Several players, including Rory McIlroy, have cited fears about the Zika virus as the reason for not turning up – others have simply shown no enthusiasm to be Olympians and appear more interested in increasing their bank balance.

The Olympic tournament is an individual event but the USA probably have the strongest team as BUBBA WATSON, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed and Matt Kuchar are all winners on the PGA Tour and played in the Ryder Cup. Watson may be the pick of the quartet as he’s been enthused about the Olympics from day one. He is 16/1 with several firms including Betfred, who offer a quarter the odds for place bets on the first five places.

With a field of only 60, bookmakers have differing views on how to approach each-way betting in the Men’s Olympic competition with some only paying out on the medal positions – check with your bookmaker before placing a bet.

After registration, new customers with BetFred get £30 as a free bet if they bet £10.

There are hopes of a medal for Team GB as Major winners Justin Rose and DANNY WILLETT both take part. Masters winner Willett would cap a year to remember if winning in Rio as he also became a father for the first time in the spring. The 28/1 for the Yorkshireman with sportingbet certainly makes some appeal. Open winner Henrik Stenson is the general 11/2 favourite but Spain’s Sergio Garcia has also been popular, though can still be backed at 9/1 with Boylesports. At much bigger odds (a general 150/1), Japan’s Yuta Ikeda could give each-way backers a run for their money.
