Vettel favourite for Monaco victory

Sports Betting

While McLaren driver Fernando Alonso is off running in the Indianapolis 500 this weekend, his vacant spot in the Monaco Grand Prix is being filled by Jenson Button, who comes back to F1 for just the one race. With an admittance himself that he was feeling a bit rusty on his return to the sport and the fact that the McLaren’s have not been as competitive as they would have hoped to have been so far this season, it’s not likely going to end in a spectacular win for Button who is a big 500/1 outsider to repeat his 2009 success at the race.

So as romantic as it would be for him to cross the line first, it’s not likely to happen. Sebastian Vettel who is is the Drivers Championship leader at the moment with a six-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton looks the best bet for the weekend after practices on Thursday and Friday. He was quick and he looks a pretty solid 8/11 punt at Ladbrokes land Pole Position at the Monaco Grand Prix. Vettel has just the one win in Monaco, coming all the way back in 2011.

Lewis Hamilton did grab the win here last season but his race speed this season across the board has been a bit erratic. In Thursday’s practice, he was only 8th quickest in the second practice after his good showing on Wednesday (Friday is a rest day in Monaco). Hamilton landed a win at the Spanish Grand Prix in the previous race to close the gap on Vettel who finished second. That’s two wins each for Vettel and Hamilton this season from the five races, with Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas winning in Russia.

Bottas finished the first practice at Monaco as 4th quickest but was only 10th quickest in the second practice as the Mercedes team really struggled. Hamilton is trading at 9/4 with Ladbrokes to take the title again in Monaco and at least the Mercedes team have gone very well there, winning each of the last four editions of the famous race (Nico Rosberg with three of those wins). Both Red Bull’s drivers, Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo showed up decently well in practice and it may not be a bad punt on Ricciardo to grab a top three finish this weekend at a price of 6/5. But Vettel looks to have the edge over everyone.
