Watford are on the lookout for their eighth manager since Gino Pozzo took over the club in 2012, with the 55-year-old Walter Mazzarri the latest boss to fail to last beyond a single season.

The Pozzos are the first family to own clubs in the top flights of England, Spain and Italy at the same time but the Italian family are relative paupers when it comes to the billionaire’s playground that has become the Premier League.

Gino’s brief was to transform the Hornets from also-ran to genuine title contenders in four years but he’s not helped his cause by chopping and changing the man responsible for team affairs every time they fail to get the team into Europe. The Watford job is certainly a poisoned chalice but there is talk that they could turn to a familiar figure, Slavisa Jokanovic, to bring back some stability.

Jokanovic was the man who got Watford promoted to the Premier League in 2015 and he did a good job at Fulham in the season just gone, even though the Cottagers fell just short in the play-offs. He is 16/1 with a number of bookmakers to be next Watford manager, including Coral.

Claudio Ranieri was initially made favourite to be next Watford manager but has now drifted out to a best 4/1. The 65-year-old has dismissed retirement talk and has already been linked with a series of vacancies but whether the newly-deposed Leicester boss would be willing to work for an owner whose favourite saying is’ fire at will’ must be doubtful.

Former Russia coach Leonid Slutsky is the new favourite at 3/1 with Marco Silva, expected to leave Hull City following their relegation, at 7/2. The rest of the list is made up of the usual suspects who appear when Premier League jobs come up for grabs.
