There have been two massive political upsets this year, with the Brexit referendum result and the outcome of the US Presidential election. Neither were seen coming and both started off with heavy favouritism on their opposition market selections when results starting rolling in on the night. But with momentum rapidly changing in each market, the upsets were landed.

For bookmaker Paddy Power, the result of the US Election cast them our four million, because they had paid out three weeks early on Democrat Hillary Clinton winning the race as all polls suggested that she was going to. But it didn’t happen and with so many punters taking advantage of big prizes on her opponent Donald Trump, the bookmaker was smashed hard.

One 72 year old though called both political upsets and landed a cool £40,000 for it as well. The punter, who lives on a small island in the UK, backed a Brexit and Trump double at Paddy Power back in the summer and on top of that, he had placed several other single wagers on The Donald, with bets staked on market odds as a big as 20/1.

Noticing the similarities between Brexit and the US Election, he said: “The Brexit vote and Trump seemed kind of parallel. People are disaffected by everything happening in Westminster and that politicians there are out of touch with the rest of us, and I think American’s felt the exact same thing about those in Washington.”

“Even though I’d bet on Trump, I only told a couple of people I thought he’d win. They didn’t react well when I told him so I kept my opinions to myself.

“Like Brexit, you felt like a bit of a rebel for wanting a different outcome to what you’re being told you should want, we were the silent majority. Both were protest votes.”

One other Paddy Power, from Kerry, had continuously backed The Donald through the campaign, starting when he was as big as 20/1 for the win. The punter just kept backing him at 14/1, 11/1, 10/1, 8/1 and 7/1! In total the punter had placed nearly £5 grand on Trump across the various priced and collected just over €40k from Paddy Power when The Donald was announced as the next US President.
