PDC Darts European Championship 2016 Betting Preview & Winner Odds

The Wright one to challenge MVG in Belgium?

Darts Betting

The World Championships will be with us before we know it at this pace, but the next big tournament on the PDC is the PDC Darts European Championship 2016 competition which will run October 28th – October 30th. This event will be held out in Belgium at the Ethias Arena in Hasselt and it is a relatively new deal as this will be just the ninth edition of the European Championship. Who will be up there standing on the oche as European champion?

This one for the top European players from the ten European tour events from across the season. So this has knocked out some players from the running at the likes of Adrian Lewis and Raymond van Barneveld who aren’t there. Heading up the market are the usual faces of Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor. Van Gerwen is going as 11/10 favourite in PDC Darts European Championship 2016 Betting followed by taylor at a price of 7/2. Van Gerwen is top seed for the tournament while Taylor is 11th seed, but The Power has managed to land himself in the opposite half of the draw to MVG so they would only meet up in the final.

In PDC Darts European Championship 2016 Betting Name the Finalist market, a Phil Taylor/Michael van Gerwen wager will fetch you a price of 10/3. That’s  decent price knocking around for that one actually. Taylor opened against seventh seed Alan Norris and really should be unopposed in his quarter, with the only tricky threat there like to be Mensur Sulovic who would be a quarter final opponent for The Power.

It would be a shock if Michael van Gerwen weren’t in the semi finals of the draw because he looks totally unopposed up there. At that stage he may well meet up with the winner of the big first round match up of James Wade v Gary Anderson. The winner of that match would be favourite to go and clash with Mighty Mike in the final four. So where should the money be going? Well it has to stay on the shoulders of Van Gerwen simply because he has form in tournament as he is going out and looking for his third straight title in a row. Between them, Taylor and Van Gerwen have won six of the previous eight editions.

PDC Darts European Championship 2016 Betting Draw

So the top 32 players on the Order of Merit, which is organised by the amount of monies won from the ten European Tour events across the season, get a crack at this one. That’s why you are not seeing some of the bigger players in the event and why Taylor is down as 11th seed. The first round of the PDC Darts European Championship 2016 goes over the best of 11 legs, with the second round and quarter finals being contested over the best of 19 legs. The Semi Finals and the final itself are then the best of 21 legs.

In the top half of the draw the seeds are:
Michael van Gerwen (1), James Wade (4), Kim Huybrechts (5) and Jelle Klaasen (8)

In the bottom half of the draw the seeds are:
Mensur Suljovic (2), Peter Wright (3), Dave Chisnall (6) and Alan Norris (7)

The first round matches will all be played on October 28th, while the 29th will see all of the quarterfinal matches played. The Semi Finals and the Final itself will all be played on October 30th.

PDC Darts European Championship 2016 Betting Prediction

So are we just boiling the field down to a two-horse race between Taylor and Van Gerwen? Taylor won the opening four editions of the tournament but he hasn’t been back to the final since then. So it is worth skipping over The Power for this one and that is where the field and value open up. You basically are looking for someone to oppose Michael van Gerwen and the best shot of doing that is from the bottom half of the draw and taking him down in the final. There is no-one in the top half who is likely to beat out MVG there.

So if you skip over Taylor, who should be a quarter finalist, then there is value down on third seed Peter Wright. The Scotsman, going off as third seed has had a solid year on the European Tour events and can make a run at this. Only a potential quarter final against Chisnall may be a hiccup on the path, but the Scotsman looks fantastic each way value for this one. Actually both he and Chanel are sat at the same price and the winner of that potential quarter final between them is worth a shot on the outright market at the time. You could hedge your bets with a small flutter on both of them really as they are big 14/1 prices.

That’s where the value looks to be, while of course, it is going to take something special to take down Michael van Gerwen. MVG’s recent win at the Unibet World Grand Prix, bouncing back from a loss against Taylor in the final of the Champions League of Darts speaks volumes about the Dutchman. He is not going to be kept from too many titles.
