Who can stop MVG at the Ally Pally?

Darts Betting

The biggest darts tournament of the year goes off on December 15th and this is the one that everyone wants to win. This of course in the PDC Darts World Championship 2016/2017, the chance for one man to be crowned the world champion. As usual, the tops darts action will come from the Alexandra Palace and the final will be held in the new year on January 2nd. So it is a massive couple of weeks of darts betting action and there is a prize fund over £1.5 million on the board for the tournament. There’s no other event like this for support for the players at a tournament. This is where it really counts and heading up the outright winner market is Dutchman Michael van Gerwen who is 3/4 outright favourite at 888Sport.

PDC Darts World Championship 2016/2017

Van Gerwen is a former champion having won the title back in 2014 but despite his dominance in the game, hasn’t been able to rise back to the top again. He is the top seed going into the tournament and looking at the draw he can probably skip through to the quarter finals without breaking much of a sweat really. Mighty Mike has landed eight other major titles this year but can he get his hands back on the World Championship title? Well, given the form that he has laid down this year, it’s going to take a brave punter to lay him. But with misfires at the Ally Pally in the last couple of seasons, it may be worth doing so.

The reigning World Champion is Scotland’s Gary Anderson, who beat out two-time world champion Adrian Lewis in last season’s showcase event. Anderson, who is on the opposite half of the draw to Van Gerwen, goes as number two seed for the tournament and is running at a price of 6/1 in the outright winner market. Anderson has failed to add a premier event title this year to his World Championship win at the start of the year, though. But he is just one of three men in the 72 man field going into the Ally Pally action starting the tournament at under double figures in the market. With little surprise it Phil Taylor who is trading as one of the top contenders for the action.

He is a sixteen time World Champion of course and the legend of the game that everyone would love to emulate. The Power comes in at a price of 9/1 in the PDC Darts World Championship 2016/2017 winner market and the problem for Taylor is the draw. That is because he is in the second quarter of the draw, which first up means that he would have to go into a semi final clash with Michael Van Gerwen most likely if he wants to get his hands on the title, and he’s not in an easy section itself. So will Taylor be able to buckle down with his world-beating form and conquer the draw and the title itself? He is absolutely not winning as many titles as he was in the prime of his career but he is still capable of title runs as seen in this season’s Champions League of Darts final when he demolished Van Gerwen in the final. It’s always a fantastic sightseeing Taylor on top of his games and hopefully, the veteran brings his A-game.

It is a long route to the final of the PDC Darts World Championship 2016/2017, so who will it be this time around who is crowned king of the oche at the Ally Pally?

PDC Darts World Championship 2016/2017 Draw

There are 72 players taking a shot at the championship and that involves sixteen of them in a Preliminary Round. So come the first round of action there will be the usual round of 64 and the tournament is just a straight knockout.

The 72 players will consist of:

  • Top 32 players in the PDC Main Order of Merit
  • Top 16 Pro Tour Order of Merit players
  • Top 4 European players from the Pro Tour Order of Merit
  • 16 International qualifiers
  • 4 PDPA qualifiers

The first round of action will be played from December 15th-22nd and will be the best of 5 sets. The second round is played across December 23rd-29th and like the Third Round (which is on December 28th-29th) it will be the best of seven sets. The quarter finals are all played on December 30th and are the best of 9 sets, while the two semi final match-ups are played on January 1st over the best of 11 sets and then the Final is held on January 2nd over the best of 13 sets.

The top half of the draw is the fascinating one here because Michael van Gerwen is the top seed and heading up the first quarter. There’s really not much in his way to stop him easy through to the semi finals frankly. His highest ranked opponent in the quarter of 8th seed Mensur Suljovic. But then things really get interesting in the second quarter of the draw where Adrian Lewis, Phil Taylor and Raymond Van Barneveld and dangerous floater Kim Huybrechts are residing. So obviously the winner of that quarter would most likely be squared up against Michael van Gerwen in the semi final.

Quarter Betting Odds for PDC Darts World Championship 2016/2017 Draw

1st Quarter
Michael van Gerwen 1/87, Mensur Suljovic 12/1, Simon Whitlock 19/1, Robert Thornton 20/1, 28/1 bar

2nd Quarter
Phil Taylor 5/6, Adrian Lewis 9/2, Raymond van Barneveld 5/1, Kim Huybrechts 10/1, 16/1 bar

3rd Quarter
Gary Anderson 5/6, Dave Chisnall 3/1, Jelle Klaasen 6/1, 10/1 bar

4th Quarter
Peter Wright 11/10, James Wade 11/4, Ian White 7/1, Michael Smith 10/1, 14/1 bar

What that means is that the top players in the bottom half of the draw like Gary Anderson, Peter Wright and James Wade could find themselves with a big opportunity to make a run at the final. The value on Peter Wright coming through the bottom half of the draw looks some decent value here and the Scotsman is a price of 11/4 to reach the final with 888Sport. Given the draw that is ahead of him in the fourth quarter of the draw, he could be well backed substantially in PDC Darts World Championship 2016/2017 betting.

PDC Darts World Championship 2016/2017 Predictions

It is hard to lay Michael van Gerwen in this one because you are looking at rare exceptions when someone steps up to the plate and delivers a consistently strong performance to stop him. So there is still value on MVG taking down the Ally Pally field. Our tip to come through the field as the dark horse value shot would be Peter Wright. We like his draw and the price on him putting in an appearance in the final looks value for your darts betting.
