Swinton Hurdle History and Trends

The Swinton Handicap Hurdle is a Grade Three race run over 2m at Haydock Park for horses aged four years or older. Established in 1978, this contest was widely regarded as the last notable National Hunt race of the season but it now comes at the beginning of a new jumps campaign, though is still often the last race for top-end handicappers but they are put away for the summer.
Key races which have provided pointers for this race in recent years include the Scottish County Hurdle, Imperial Cup and Scottish Champion Hurdle but the one stand-out trend is that there hasn’t been a winner aged older than seven in 20 years. Four-year-olds have to have plenty of class to win the Swinton Hurdle as they only get 4lb from older horses at this time of the year. Horses carrying 11st 7lb or more struggle to give the weight away as 20 have tried in the last 12 years and not one has even reached the frame.
Those rated between 126 and 135 have an outstanding record so that’s the band that we should probably be concentrating on and a past career on the Flat is also a good guide.

LONDON PRIZE renews rivalry with Zubayr and Vosne Romanee having finished behind that pair in the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr. But he was closing at the finish having been held up in the rear division and wasn’t beaten far. Tom O’Brien is likely to have him closer to the pace today and he can reverse the placing on better terms. He has the aforementioned Flat speed that is often a big plus in the Swinton Hurdle, having won at Newbury and Nottingham in October after finishing second here over 2m – the 12/1 with William Hill looks very generous.

Last year’s Swinton Hurdle fourth John Constable tries again and has to be of interest off a 3lb lower handicap mark. But his odds (currently a best 7/1) reflect that. Zubayr looks short at 7/1 given he’s gone up 4lb since that Ayr run but the improving Multiculture could be a player at 11/1 with Paddy Power having just crept into the race off bottom weight.
