Ricky Burns v Julius Indongo Boxing Preview & Odds – 15th April 2017

Big opportunity for Burns in Glasgow

Sports Betting

It is going to be a huge month of boxing with the bouts of Manny Pacquiao v Amir Khan and Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko on the cards, but this weekend there is an interesting bout coming up for Ricky Burns. He goes into a super-lightweight unification fight on Saturday against the unbeaten IBF and IBO world champion Julius Indonga at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Saturday. The two fighters are 34 years old and Burns is keen to show his opponent that he isn’t near retirement yet.

That is because Indonga said that he thought that his opponent had retired by now. Indonga is known as a big hitter and won his belt after just thirty seconds against Russia’s Eduard Troyanovsky back in December last year. However, this bout in Glasgow will be just his second fight outside of his home country of Namibia and the Glasgow crowd could help Burns a lot in this one to take on his opponent.

Before that win over Troyanovsky, Indonga had won half of his 20 professional fights by a knockout, so he has some power in him. Indonga is also a southpaw, which Burns has struggled against before in his career. WBA world super-lightweight champion Burns has been sparring with southpaws in preparation for this and he has been looking powerful in camp.

Burns holds a W41 L5 D1 record from his career and has a 30% knockout rate, which doesn’t match up to the 52% that Indongo holds from his career. The two boxers are the same age and the same height, but there is that notable difference between their Orthodox and Southpaw stances which will be interesting. It has been a long way back for Burns after he surrendered his lightweight world title to Terence Crawford back in 2014 and then failed to beat Dejan Zlaticanin for the vacant WBC belt a few months later.

He had looked disillusioned with the sports under former promoter frank Warren after training for fights that would ultimately be cancelled. But he is well back on track inside his new camp, at the right weight and Saturday’s fight could be a huge stepping stone for him because he could get a trip to Vegas to faces American Adrien Broner.
