Southampton v Crystal Palace Betting Preview – League Cup 21st September

Well these two sides have suddenly bust into form which should make this League Cup third round tie a cracker. Southampton have won back to back home games in the last week, while the Eagles have started to fly a little higher with a strength of four games unbeaten having gone W3 D1. So this could be an exciting affair down on the South Coast in midweek between the two who will be looking at this Cup and taking it pretty seriously you would imagine. Three time these two met last season and it was the Eagles who came out on top.

Southampton v Crystal Palace Betting Tips

A great looking match here because both of them should have some interest in pursuing the Cup. In each of the last two seasons they have played each other three times because of FA Cup clashes too. Last season it was Crystal Palace who came out on top in the meetings with two wins to one but the season before that it was the Saints who took two wins and lost one of the three classes. So nothing really to split the pair of them. Southampton did win the last meeting between the two clubs at St Mary’s, taking a  4-1 league win over the Eagles. It’s been a good week at home after previous disappointments this season for the Saints, beating Sparta Prague 3-0 before landing a 1-0 win over Swansea on the weekend, their first Premier League win of the term.

So much improved then for Claude Puel’s men and those two victories last week both came with a clean sheet too. However, they have struggled overall for clean sheets and you can back both teams to score in this one at a price of 7/10 and that’s likely to happen as both have been on the scoresheet in four of their last six meetings. Over 2.5 goals is trading at a price of 17/20 for the match as well. Southampton have Charlie Austin and Shane Long both at a quote of 9/2 in the first goalscorer market, with Austin going well in particular over the last week. The Saints have found the back of the net in nine of their last ten against Palace.

So the Saints appear to be on the up, but so too Palace. The Eagles have struck back to back wins in the Premier League and in all competitions are unbeaten in their last four, with three wins in that sequence. So a drastic upward swing from Palace then and they took out Blackpool 2-0 in the last round of the League Cup. They romped their way to 4-1 win over Stoke on the weekend, only conceding right at the death in a comfortable match for them. Christian Benteke wasn’t among the goals on the weekend, but he is up at a price of 6/1 in the first goal scorer market for Wednesday night’s game. Palace took a 2-1 FA Cup win at Southampton last season.

The last time that Southampton and Crystal Palace squared off in the League Cup, it was the Eagles who took the win, banking a 2-0 victory back in 2001. Four of the last eight meetings has produced a 2-0 scoreline and you can back a Palace 2-0 at 18/1 or a Southampton 2-0 at 17/2. So with Palace running on big momentum now and hopefully getting Christian Benteke amongst the goals, they will be a threat in this one. They have struck a goal in each of their last four games played now and they can turn up on the south coast and really give the Saints a good run for their moment. A place in the last 16 awaits.

Southampton v Crystal Palace Predictions

Southampton have European interest this season, let’s not forget so that could just tip an advantage to the Eagles. It means that the visitors may go with a stronger side than the home side do and Palace have held their own well enough against the Saints over the last couple of seasons to suggest they can turn up and nick it.
