Stoke-on-Trent Central By-Election Odds – Politics Betting February 23

Has Nuttall's Hillsborough fiasco ended hopes of a by-election upset in Stoke?

Betting on the outcome of elections and referendums is becoming increasingly popular with several punters cashing in on surprise results over the last 12 months.

On February 23rd, voters from across the Stoke-on-Trent Central Constituency will cast their ballots in a by-election triggered by the resignation of Tristram Hunt, who had been Labour MP for the constituency since being elected in the 2010 General Election. He’s stepped down, controversially, from Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet to become director of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

A total of 10 candidates are standing in the by-election with two independent candidates standing against representatives from Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, UKIP, the Green Party, the BNP, the Monster Raving Loony Party and the Christian People’s Alliance. The winner is expected to be announced sometime after 2am on the morning of February 24th.

Parliamentary by-elections come and go and rarely have an impact on the world order but this one could offer a potentially telling clue to the current state of UK politics. It’s certainly important to Labour, and their leader in particular! Were the incumbent party to lose a seat they’ve held since 1950, it would probably cause even the notoriously thick-skinned Corbyn to think twice about whether he is the right person to lead his party into the next General Election. Labour have been playing down polls they conducted over who might be a suitable replacement for their current leader but it rather reinforces the belief that the executive is considering alternatives. Despite the government’s woes, Labour have not really taken advantage but are only a best 3/4 with Boylesports to retain Stoke-on-Trent Central via Gareth Snell.

UKIP leader Paul Nuttall is running himself in Stoke-on-Trent Central but his press officer, Lynda Roughley, has done him no favours by claiming ‘he lost close friends’ at Hillsborough on his website. That wasn’t true, as Nuttall had to admit later though he distanced himself from the claims. UKIP are still only 11/8 to upset Labour but Mr Nuttall does seem to be following in the tradition of UKIP leaders by opening his mouth to put his foot in it!

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron has been campaigning for Dr Zulfiqar Ali in Stoke and his party are rated a better bet than the Conservatives, though are still available at 33/1 in places.
