Royal Troon is the setting for The Open Championship 2016 golf which will hit its 145th editions this year. The tournament starts on July 14th and wraps itself up on the 17th at the famous Ayrshire golf club in Scotland. This will be the ninth edition of The Open Championship to be held at the Royal Troon Golf Club. The last time the tournament was held there it was Todd Hamilton who walked away with the title, which was back in 2004.

As for the current Open Championship holder, that will be Zach Johnson who landed a victory in a four hole play off against Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen at St Andrew’s last year. The course will play, as it did in 2004 over 7,175 years for a par 71. Johnson is running at 50/1 to go out and defend his title and not too surprisingly there are some familiar faces at the head of the market. Jason Day and Rory McIlroy are running as joint 15/2 favourites at online betting site Bet365 in The Open Championship 2016 Golf Betting, followed by Jordan Spieth at 8/1.

Those are the only three players in the field who are coming in at under double figures, with Dustin Johnson sat at 12/1 and then rest of the  20/1 or bigger. John was the winning of the US Open 2016 after having survived a controversial ruling when officials intervened and it was England’s Danny Willett who surprisingly walked off with the Masters 2016 title. So that’s one surprise win and one not so much so far in the 2016 Majors. What’s next on the cards?

Rory McIlroy hasn’t won a Major since the 2014 PGA Championship and missed the cut at the US Open 2016. In three of his last four Majors (having made the cut) he has landed a top ten finish and that will be a decent way to look at backing him for The Open. He won the tournament back in 2014 but missed out on title defence last year because of injury. On the back of his T10 at the Masters earlier in the year and a recent fight back from a poor start at the French Open, he has the resilience more than anything, to stick a top ten finish.

Jason Day carded a T4 at The Open Championship last year, part of the hot streak of Majors form that he is in. He has come home in the top ten now in each of his last five Majors entered, which included his breakthrough win at the 2015 PGA Championship. He is going to be a force to be reckoned with of course just through his form and has been the man of the hour for some time. However, his history at The Open Championship is considerably poor compared to that of the other Majors.

Jordan Spieth saw some immense Majors form snapped with a poor T37 at the US Open this year where he never got himself going. Prior to that, the had produced two wins, two second place finishes and one T4 over a run of five Majors. That was the immense form that was expected to guide to him to more Major success this year. It hasn’t happened though and with some average form only on the PGA Tour, he has gone on the drift a little bit compared to McIlroy and Day in The Open Championship 2016 Golf Betting.

So once against with the short prices, it’s well worth looking beyond them. Phil Mickelson has had his troubles at Royal Troon before and will probably be more towards the back of punter’s minds. Louis Oosthuizen is never a bad punt when stepping out onto courses like this and the South African will have some big appeal at a big 33/1 punt. You also have Brooks Koepka who bookmakers are completely split over, running anywhere from 35/1 out to 50/1 at some places. Defending champions Zach Johnson is around that 50/1 mark as well.

Adam Scott and Justin Rose who are 20/1 and 25/1 respectively but don’t have the track record at The Open to pique a lot of interest, whereas Rickie Fowler may be the one to spark some interest. He hasn’t shown up at a Major for a while now, certainly having fallen a long way short of his epic 2014 season at the big four, but he has carder two top five finishes at The Open in the last five editions and while he has appeal in the Top Ten Market, may not be a bad each way punt at all. Tiger Woods has pulled out.

The Open Championship 2016 Golf Betting Field

There is no Tiger Woods for the tournament but there are past champions like Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Paul Lawrie and Darren Clarke in the field. From the betting perspective the notable past champions are Zach Johnson and Rory McIlroy the last two winners of The Open. The 2004 Winner (the last time that the tournament was held at Royal Troon) Todd Hamilton, is also expected back in the field.

The top ten from last year’s tournament, and perhaps some indicator of performance are back for a shot at the tournament namely Jason Day, Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koepka, Marc Leishman, Jordan Niebrugge, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Danny Willett.

The Open Championship History and Stats

This is the oldest of the four golf Majors and one steeped in heritage and prestige. It sits as the third Major in the calendar year, sandwiched between The US Open and the PGA Championship. Rory McIlroy jointly holds the record for the lowest round of golf ever at The Open Championship, the 63 he carded in the first round in 2010 and that was the joint lowest round in relation to par as well posted in the history of The Open Championship 2016 Golf Betting.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are just two of seven players to have even gone wire to wire at The Open. Just one of the last seven editions of The Open Championship 2016 Golf have been won by a margin of more than three strokes. That was Louis Oosthuizen’s epic St Andrews win in 2010 when he beat Lee Westwood by seven. There have been four play offs in the last twelve editions of the tournament and this leads you to good The Open Championship 2016 Golf Betting markets such as margin of victory and whether or not there will be a play off.

There has been a play off in two of the last three editions of The Open at Royal Troon. You can also look at the winning nationality market. In the last ten editions there have been four US winners, four European and two South African victors. The last time that someone successfully defend an Open title was Padraig Harrington when he won back to back in 2007 and 2008, following Tiger Woods’ back to back wins in 2005 and 2006.

The Open Championship 2016 Golf Betting

We are looking at an each way punt on Louis Oosthuizen at 33/1, a former winner of the Major and runner up last year through a play off. He has the fit to go well in Scotland this month. The other contender would be Rickie Fowler who has some track record at the tournament, which suggests a fit if he can get out of the blocks quickly and who is due to show up at a major. Solid top ten finish punts on both too could return some value in The Open Championship 2016 Golf Betting.
