Tottenham v Monaco Betting Preview – UEFA Champions League 13th August

The Lilywhites will be feeling pretty confident heading into this one. They looked more like their usual selves on the weekend in hammering Stoke in the Premier League, Mauricio Pochettino’s men finding top gear. They will have no fears over Monaco either because they overcame them in the UEFA Europa League last season, knocking the French outfit of the group stage there. So every reason for Spurs, who are playing this one at Wembley because of construction work at White Hart Lane, to go and put on a convincing display in this one. However, Monaco did win their last game in England, which was against Tottenham’s North London rivals Arsenal.

Tottenham v Monaco Betting Tips

So Spurs get another crack at Monaco as they start their Group F campaign in the UEFA Champions League. Spurs knocked Monaco out of the Europa League group stage last season with a 4-1 beating of their opponent at White Hart Lane, which included a hat trick from Erik Lamela. The two sides played out a 1-1 draw in Monaco. That was their first comings together in a competitive meeting so Spurs are up in the head to head. Tottenham, after their third place finish in the Premier League last term are now in their second UEFA Champions League group stage campaign. Their first one, back in 2010/11 saw them get to the quarter finals. Last season in Europe they were good at the Lane, winning four of their five home games as they went to the quarter finals there, where their run ended.

Spurs are playing European matches at Wembley this season, so will that make a difference to them? Spurs do hold a 100% home record against French visitors, winning all four of their previous meetings. From those four previous home games against French clubs, Spurs have scored eleven goals and shipped five. So it’s probably worth having a look at over 2.5 goals in his one for a price of even money. Harry Kane broke his seasons’ duck on the weekend with a goal in the Premier League and he is running at even money in the anytime goalscorer market, with Erik Lamela at 9/4 to get on the scoresheet again against Monaco. Spurs have won just one of their last five Champions League games (W1 D2 L2).

But then Monaco don’t have a great record running in England though. They have gone W1 D2 L2 on their last five visits to face English opposition. Their win in that sequence was at Arsenal at the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League. This is the seventh Champions League campaign for Monaco who had to come past Fenerbahce then Villarreal in the play offs to get here. They actually have a decent record of having made it to the knockout stages in five of their previous six Champions League campaign, running all the way to the final in 2004. At the back, they have only shipped the one goal in their last eight group games in the competition.

They are well into their season at the moment and they have posted a W6 D1 L1 record from their eight games played so far across all competitions, which included a win over PSG in the French top flight. They have scored seven goals in their last two games played. In the anytime goalscorer market, it’s hard to pin anyone down as value from Monaco. Six different players scored those seven goals in those two games, with defender Fabinho netting in each. He, incidentally, is their top scorer in Ligue 1 with three goals this season. Monaco have actually only managed to score in eight to their last 12 UEFA Champions League matches, notably reaching the quarter final in the 2014/15 season with just seven goals in their ten games. Eight of their last nine goals in the competition have been netted in the second half of matches.

Tottenham v Monaco Predictions

There shouldn’t be anything for Tottenham to be particularly troubled by in this fixture. Granted Monaco did beat PSG recently in league competition, but that was at home and Tottenham should enjoy their night out at Wembley. They looked to finally find their top gear on the weekend and they should be able to carry that through with a win in this fixture. It’s worth a little flutter on the game going above 2.5 goals as Monaco are scoring at the moment.
