The first golf Major of the year. It is here with us this week and after a tremendous back nine at Augusta on the final day of action twelve months ago, Danny Willett landed his first major title as he edged out Lee Westwood and Jordan Spieth. What will 2017 have in store at the best players in the world take on Augusta National once more for one of the most prestigious prizes in the sport? This is the 81st edition of the famous golf tournament and goes from April 6th through 9th. The course is 7,435 yards and it one that will test everyone.

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the tournament, but former winners back for this year’s edition include Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Zach Johnson. That’s right, it leaves Rory McIlroy, who is 8/1 Boylesports joint second favourite alongside 2014 Champion Spieth, looking for his first Major title. This is the only Major that he is missing from his career. Outright US Masters Augusta Betting 2017 Golf betting favorite Dustin Johnson is in the same boat, looking to pull on that famous green jacket for the first time in his career.

There is a big field to wade through for US Masters Augusta Betting 2017 Golf betting of course and we’ll break down the field a bit. This is the smallest field of all the four Majors and will it be one of the big-hitting favourites who storms the field in Georgia? The big question perhaps is will we have a first-time winner on our hands again, because of course, that include either of the main front runners Johnson or McIlroy? Buckle down for four great days of the best golf action around.

US Masters Augusta Betting 2017 Golf Preview

Dustin Johnson
Augusta Form 30-38-38-13-MC-6-4
He is the one to beat in current form. He was so remarkably dominant at the World Match Play recently, which was his third win in three tournaments this season, makes it hard to go against the American. It has been staggering brilliant stuff from him and he is just going through the simple stuff very well. His massive drives are going as a straight as an arrow and he then he has been wedging his way on to the green for birdie chance after birdie chance. His form and steadiness is just as relenting when he reaches into the bag for his putter. His long driving could be a key factor in him getting close, because of the importance of scoring on the Par 5’s at Augusta. He is just on such a peak at the moment, it’s hard to find a reason not to back him to win this one.

Jordan Spieth
Augusta Form 1-2-1
He is a former winner of course and punters haven’t deserted him in the outright market at all. He has been sitting as second favorite behind Johnson for a fair while now. There has been something magical about Spieth at Augusta. The normal trend is that it takes a fair few attempts at the course to really get a feel for it before going on and pushing for a title there. In his three appearances at the US Masters in his career he has two second place finishes and that win. Stunning stuff. He was well in contention to defend his 2015 title twelve months ago, but then crumbled on the final back nine. He’s not in the form that Johnson has been in, but he has the numbers at the course to warrant a flutter.

Rory McIlroy
Augusta Form 20-MC-15-40-25-8-4-10
It will be fantastic if Johnson, Spieth and McIlroy are all on top of their game next week. After his injury, McIlroy is looking pretty close to his best, it has to be said. He bombed against Soren Kjeldsen in the opening round of the World Match Play, but you can wipe that out and after a surging run to finish four at Bay Hill and a decent top ten finish at the WGC Mexico Championship, he is still having some appeal. Like Johnson, Augusta is a good fit for McIlroy’s game but he has failed here before, famously blowing his four shot final day lead in 2011. He was fourth back in 2015, his best finish and since that 2011 shocking finish, he really hasn’t been in contention on the back nine on the final day. He’s good enough to go much better at Augusta of course, will this be the year that he does?

The Best of the Rest

Well, Jason Day, after missing the World Match Play to be with his ill mother, makes an interesting fit for the tournament again. He was outright favourite last year but came home tenth. He’s pretty handy around Augusta and while his participation hinges on his mother’s health, and he hasn’t been anywhere near the winner’s circle since last summer anywhere. It’s reasonable enough to assume why, but if he turns up, the 20/1 price on him isn’t unappealing at all. Hideki Matsuyama has been enjoying a decent season, but his putting will be put to a severe test in this one. That’s about the only thing holding him back from a Major title and the frustratingly quick greens at Augusta may not work for him. Jon Rahm, thanks to his World Match Play Championship performance has seen his odds slashed for the US Masters 2017, because remember that was on the back of a top five finish in Mexico and his title winning run at the Farmers Insurance Open. He’s running hot with consistency and form. The young Spaniard made his Major debut at the US Open last year as a low amateur. Surely he can’t crack the Masters at the first attempt?

With the crazy, challenges greens at Augusta, you need someone who is hot with the putter. That, along with Greens In Regulation and Scrambling are the two most important stats in trying to pick out a winner. This is one of those events where someone who gets their noses in front early can defend. It’s a tough game to play catch up at Augusta and even though Spieth and Willett (who had both played Augusta just once before winning there) have bucked a trend with early wins there, only one first time player has won there and most winners will have played on average, the US Masters six times before landing the title there. So big course experience is a trend that had to be taken into consideration and McIlroy and Dustin Johnson have that.

There is stalwart Phil Mickelson who has won here three times before. He is on a long barren streak of titles, not having won anywhere for four years. He will probably show up and put in some fantastically competitive golf on a course he loves but the best value around on him sits on a Boylesports Top Ten Finish at a price of 2/1. The experienced Justin Rose has been quietly going under the radar in this one, and the Englishman is back for his 12th crack at the Masters, having landed four top tens from his eleven previous attempts. He hasn’t been all that hot with his putting game this season though and you can’t have that not working an expect to win at Augusta.

US Masters Augusta Betting 2017 Golf Predictions

How can you not throw something at Dustin Johnson in this one. You have to get onside with him just because there is no-one close to his standard and consistency at the moment. Augusta can be a cruel beast though and that won’t stop us looking further afield. Brandt Snedeker takes a big fancy at 50/1 with Boyleports (and shortening) as an each way punt. He has decent number at Augusta and hasn’t been tremendously far away from producing something much better at the course. He has three top ten finishes in his last six tournaments this season and is one of the better ones around at the moment with the putter. Brooks Koepka takes our fancy too at a little bigger of a price of 60/1 as the numbers and trends fit him. He’s around the right age, has carded a high enough finish at Augusta before to get into the mix, and is carrying steady form to make a run at this.
