Find a fit for tough Oakmont course

Golf Betting

The second major of the Golf calendar is underway at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. The is is the ninth time that the event has been hosted at Oakmont and the par 70 course will play just over 7,200 yards. Jordan Spieth landed the win last year in the US Open and is part of the usual faces running the head of the market at the moment of Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy. They are the star power attractions in the game at the moment and they have a tremendous amount of backing in the market, particularly Day who has landed a top ten finish in each of his last four Major tournaments. That’s form for you and he is at the head of the market at 6/1.

But then Rory Mcilroy and Jordan Spieth have won the US Open in the last five editions, Spieth claiming the title last year ahead of Dustin Johnson and Louis Oosthuizen. McIlroy’s title can back in 2011 at Bethesda when he crushed Jason Day by eight strokes. McIlroy is up at 12/1 to land the title for the second time in his career, while Spieth is a 9/1 punt on the market. If you are looking at current form both in the regular Tour events and in the Majors it is easy to see why Day is heading up the market.

Day’s previous record at the US Open has seen him land four top ten finishes from five previous appearances, two of those a top two finish as well. He is the force to be reckoned with at the moment and why he has been so heavily backed. It may take some stopping to catch him over the four days.

Other strong contenders in the field are Dustin Johnson who is around the same mark at Rory McIlroy in the outright winner market and Bubba Watson at around the 16/1 mark. They are the only five players in the US Open 2016 golf betting to start under the 20/1 mark in the outright winner market. Then comes Phil Mickelson (who has had more runner up finishes than any other player in the history of the US Open), Adam Scott, Justin Rose, HIdeki Matsuyama and Henrik Stenson in the mid-thirties range.

US Open 2016 Golf Stats

The last time that Oakmont hosted the tournament was back in 2007 when Argentina’s Angel Cabrera came through the field to win the event by just the one stroke. The time prior to that Ernie Els triumphed in 1994 at the course in a play off and in 1983 Larry Nelson won by one stroke. So you probably aren’t looking at a big margin of victory in US Open 2016 Golf Betting. The Winning Margin market is going to be offering odds of around 2/1 on there being a winner just the one stroke and 7/2 on the 2 stroke option. You have around 13/5 on a play off victory being nailed.

In the last twelve editions of the US Open, all but two of them have been settled by a winning margin of two strokes or less. The two exceptions in that sequence (which only produced one play off which Tiger Woods won in 2008 over Rocco Mediate) was 8 stroke victories for Martin Kaymer in 2014 and that 2011 victory for Rory McIlroy. So big wins are very, very rare in the US Open, the largest ever being posted by Tiger Woods with his 15 stroke triumph in 2000 (which is also the all time record for all Majors).

Rory McIlroy is just one of five players ever to have carded all four rounds of a US Open under par (Lee Trevino, Tony Jacklin, Lee Janzen and Curtis Strange).

US Open 2016 Golf Betting Predictions

The course is not an easy one so you will need to find a fit. When Angel Cabrera won here in the last hosting of the event, he won it with a score of five over par. Why? Because of some very thick rough, greens which run very quick and fairways that offer no margin for errors. So at the end of the day you’re likely going to be looking at the winner this year not coming home under par. This is a real test for even the best players on the planet.

Outside of the big four running in the field (Day, McIlroy, Spieth and John) Phil Mickelson has to have some appeal as an each way punt or at least in the top five finish placings. Not only because his numerous runner up spots at the US Open, but he is in decent form at the moment and he is right up there this season on the Tour in putting. Could this be the year he ends his wait for a career Grand Slam?

Billy Horschel is coming into good form and at a massive price of 100/1 in the outright market has to be worth an each way bet. He should be a good fit for the course in sticking it on the narrow fairways and only three years ago he was a halfway leader at the US Open. Matt Kuchar is also running on some his best form again at the moment and has the steady hand to make a decent impression in the tournament. Mickelson is a 13/5 poke in the Top Ten Market with Horschel a very good 5/1 option and Kuchar at 2/1. Here’s a lot more value there than just punting on the outright market in US Open 2016 Golf Betting.
