For the ninth time, sisters Venus and Serena will face off in the final of a Grand Slam. When the two come together in the final of the Australian Open on the weekend, it will be the first time meeting in the final of a Grand Slam since Wimbledon 2009. Serena won that one in straight sets and Serena will be out looking for her seventh Australian Open title. She was the longest price to win a Grand Slam than you would have been able to catch her for many years ahead of the Melbourne action.
That was because of her not having been in action for the second half of last season. So punters had looked elsewhere for value instead. But once again she is back, proving her doubters wrong and beat out Britain’s Johanna Konta along the way. Serena toppled the inspired Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the semi final, so now faces up to her sister in an emotional re-union. Venus is looking for her first ever Australian Open title but the 8th Grand Slam title of her career and she moved past the hard hitting Coco Vandeweghe in her semi final, coming from a set down and calling on all of her experience to get through.
So the presence of Serena Williams in the final is a little unexpected this time around, but the presence of Venus is even more so. Serena will get back the number one ranked spot in the world if she wins here, which says a lot about her having missed so much of the back end of last season. So who is likely to come out on top? Well, younger sister Serena is the favourite for the match and she holds a 16-11 head to head lead over her sister.
Venus Williams v Serena Williams Odds
Serena Williams 1/5, Venus Williams 4/1
This will be their first meeting since the 2015 US Open which Serena won in three sets and Serena has won seven of the last eight against her sister in he head to head. Half of those went to three sets so there is an even split there. You are looking at price of 9/5 for three sets in this one with Paddy Power in the Total Sets market. If you wanted to go down the Set Betting route then there is a Serena Williams 2-1 correct score at a price of 3/1.
Venus Williams v Serena Williams Prediction
There is a great showdown on the cards here. So who to put money behind? Well it would still have to be Serena who by and large has the upper hand over her older sister. Serena just has the extra level in defence and behind her immense first serve. She has been playing more than well enough to take down her sister here and will be fresh enough after destroying Lucic-Baroni in less than an hour in the semi. Serena Williams to take the win and nothing wrong with a 2-0 set victory on her.
