Wales v England Six Nations Rugby Preview – 4.50pm

The Principality Stadium hosts Wales v England in the Six Nations on Saturday. It’s a short turnaround for both after the opening weekend, but Wales will have had a day’s less rest having played on Sunday in their win over Italy, whereas England faced off against France in a victory on Saturday. Will that be a telling factor later on in the game?

Wales made pretty light work of Italy in the second half, but they did go into the break 7-3 down in Rome. Actually for the best part of an hour, Wales plodded their way in a pretty uninspiring fashion against a big effort from the Italian defence, but three second half tries saw the Dragons ease to an expected victory and now that sets them up for a massive clash against the English on home soil.

While the Welsh enjoyed the victory, they missed out on the bonus point, which has been introduced for the first time into the Six Nations, having failed to bank the fourth try. Questions will also be raised about their inability to break down the Italian defence for such a long spell into the game, their eventual win aided by a sin-bin for Italy. That’s pretty much when the Welsh opened up and they will be facing a dogged English defence which aren’t likely to give them too many quarters in this one.

There was a tremendous amount of slow ball from Wales as well, but then you have to turn to something that England coach Eddie Jones has pointed out. England have only won two of their last seven visits to Wales in the Six Nations. Wales have won 36 of 61 home matches against England on home soil, so this is no easy game for the Red Rose. England had to come from behind to beat France 19-16 at Twickenham, something of an ugly victory.

That was a performance which was well below the level of what the English have been playing at under Jones, who said that there will be much sharper side out this weekend in Wales. England’s victory over France set them up for a record 15th consecutive victory and they are are on a three match winning streak over the Welsh in the Six Nations. Their last visit to Wales was in 2015 at the Millennium Stadium with England taking a 21-16 victory.

It is probably going to be a tight old scrap because of England’s record in Wales and because both got off to a bit of a stuttering start in the tournament. Seven of the last ten meetings between England and Wales in the Six Nations have seen a winning margin of 10 points or less for the victorious team. So that is a decent trend to take forward to the Wales v England handicap at bookmaker Paddy Power to consider. Actually the bookie has gone with an +/-5 for a price of 10/11 for England to cover and Wales to defend.

As a winner, you would imagine that it will be England who just get across the line and keep their Grand Slam hopes alive for the season. There has been some mental blocks by the Red Roses across the border, but Jones has been delivering the goods so far for the English and while they will be put to a stern test, the weaknesses that do exist in the Welsh back line when put under pressure is likely to land England with just enough cushion for a win.

Six Nations Outright Odds

England 8/15, Ireland 11/2, Wales 11/2, Scotland 8/1, France 16/1, Italy 1000/1
