Bookmakers just favouring Wolves in Grand Final showdown

If you live the south of England, Super League’s Grand Final is unlikely to be on your must-see list this weekend. But if you live in the north, especially in the area east and south of Manchester, the clash at Old Trafford between Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors will be a bigger draw than the FA Cup Final.

Only a point separated the two teams at the end of the Super 8s, though both had to battle in their semi-finals to see off St Helens and Hull FC respectively.

Wigan won the inaugural Grand Final in 1998 and has been successful twice since, in 2010 and 2013 when they beat Warrington 30-16. The Wolves have never won the Grand Final, having also lost to the Leeds Rhinos in 2012. But Tony Smith’s men are determined to make it third-time lucky this year and make up for the heartbreak of losing the Challenge Cup Final to Hull six weeks ago when they weren’t at their best. Defeat for Wigan would be a third in a row in the Grand Final, however, so they also have a point to prove having been pipped to the League Leaders’ Shield by Saturday’s opponents.

Wigan have had to come from behind in three of their last four matches but Warrington are not a team to which you want to give a start and Warriors’ coach Shaun Wane will have been emphasising that fact this week. Wigan have won 31 of their 52 previous Super League encounters with Warrington but past history will count for nothing at Old Trafford. The Wolves have been the form team this season in Super League and look worthy-if-narrow  favourites at Evens with several firms including Skybet.

The same company offer 11/10 Warrington handing Wigan a two-point start on the handicap. It’s a tight call but that looks the right option as the Warriors may struggle to keep their posts out of range of the metronomical Kurt Gidley.
