Who will win the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup?

Will Bobs Worth live up to the billing as favourite?

Cheltenham Festival

Who will win the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup? For many it is the ultimate horse race, as it is the blue riband event of steeplechasing and is the feature of the Cheltenham Festival. This year’s edition will be ran on Friday, March 15th at 3.20pm and the feature race will be over 3 miles, two and a half furlongs with the combatants having to face a demanding 22 fences. Some big names have been covered in glory at the famous race, who will be next in line? Who will win the Cheltenham Gold Cup 2013?

Bobs Worth 3/1, Sir Des Champs 4/1, Silviniaco Conti 9/2, Long Run 6/1, First Lieutenant 10/1, Captain Chris 16/1, The Giant Bolster 16/1, Cape Tribulation 16/1

A lot of attention has been on Bobs Worth for this year’s edition and is familiar with wins at Cheltenham, as he landed the RSA Chase last year. After landing a win at the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury at the beginning of last December, he took a win against Gold Cup challengers First Lieutenant in the trial. Bobs Worth, trained by Nicky Henderson has looked in comfortable and strong shape and online bookmaker Bet365 has had him trading as favourite in the 2013 Gold Cup ante post market for a while. With four wins from four outings at Cheltenham, Bob’s Worth could be the one to stop.

But answering the question of who will win the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup is not that easy. There are a couple of other strong challengers in the field who could equally mount a serious challenger. That will fall to Sir Des Champs and Silviniaco Conti. Sir Des Champs has seen his odds shorten in the days before the start of the Cheltenham Festival as more backers flock towards him. Sir Des Champs took down his great nemesis Flemenstar at the Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown in Ireland. It was just under a two length win, but he takes the step up from winning the Jewson Novices at last year’s Cheltenham Festival to have a crack at the blue riband event. It was a timely boost for his 2013 Gold Cup chances and should be one of the front runners.

Silviniaco Conti will have questions over his versatility, but that hasn’t stopped punters backing him. He destroyed the challenge of the Giant bolster at Haydock last November and has taken four impressive wins from his last four races. One of the big question marks over the challenger is that he has yet to run over the fences at Cheltenham, so will that inexperience be costly to him in his first Gold Cup challenge? The pace is there, the jumping technique is there and the staying power is definitely there. Can the second year chaser carry on his impressive rise after winning the Betfair Chase and the Denman Chase this season? What of Long Run? He hasn’t been in the greatest form, but if the pace is hot then it will pull the 2011 winner into contention.
