Other Contenders
Victoria Azarenka will also be hoping for a strong start, with the world number one knowing that she is going to have to find something extra this season. That sounds crazy talking about the number one in the world, but she kept finding Serena Williams in the way of more success. So the Belarusian has to find a way past Williams. Azarenka was in stunning form at the start of last season, as she claimed the Australian Open. Will be looking for a similarly fast start and goes in the same half of the draw as Williams. That means a semi final clash is on the cards, and yet you would bank on Williams nine times out of ten based on last season’s match ups.
Russia’s Maria Sharapova has a good chance of putting in a semifinal appearance one would imagine. She is in the other half of the draw from WIlliams and Azarenka. Pretty straight forward run to the quarterfinals for her, and that will be important to get her serve going. Her first serve is her big weapon and so is her aggressive defence. The best on the Tour for digging in and defending from the baseline, and will be aiming for another successful year in taking a Grand Slam. The biggest problem for her last season was Victoria Azarenka, who she came off second best to, too many times.
Hopefully for Petra Kvitova it will be a prosperous season because the Tour kind of needs her presence at the top of the game. The awkward, powerful left hander really slumped after winning Wimbledon in 2011 but there were definite signs that she was waking up again. She had a decent season in the Slams without really threatening and it is probably only another ten to fifteen percent of what she was producing last season that will see her back challenging for big titles. Big threat because of playing off her left hand and a likely semi final opponent for Sharapova.
Best Outside Bet
Has to all start off again for Angelique Kerber. The young German was brilliant last season, absolutely exploded in a career year for her and the potential is there for so much more. She needs a little more seasoning but claimed big scalps consistently all the way through last season. In the mix with Kvitova and Sharapova and will therefore be a threat. If she picks up where she left off last season, in fact continues her upwards swing, she could deliver and an outsider because of her healthy long price of around 10.0 at online betting exchange Betfair.
