That honour falls upon the young Polish shoulders of Agnieszka Radwanska, who is on the up and up at the moment. She has to be confident and doesn’t really show any sign of slowing up. The young Pole is the firm favourite here, priced shortly at 5/4 with Totesport to pick up the title her, what would be the ninth of her career.
Other Contenders
Down in the bottom half of the draw is world number 14 Jelena Jankovic. Jankovic, a former world number one a few years ago, just hasn’t been the same player since a long injury in the 2010 season. However, she has the potential to upset the big guns and in a field like this, where she is one of the star attractions, then you expect her to go well. The Serbian met Radwanska in the semi final of Dubai last week, and actually played very well in the three set defeat. Well, she played well in patches, but the thing with Jankovic is that she seems to be contending well and then falls away quickly. But it was a highly improved tournament in terms of consistency for Jankovic, as she powered past Flavia Pennetta and Sam Stosur in Dubai before running on Radwanska in the semi’s. As the tournament second seed, she has a stroll to the final if she is on top of her game. China’s Shaui Peng is an interesting character in the field, because the sparky young player has a tremendous amount of talent, but she hasn’t come out of the blocks firing in 2012. This would be a good opportunity to get her confidence going again in a pretty easy field. Apart from that, you are looking at the offerings from Jarmila Gajdosova and Petra Martic, but again, like Peng haven’t exactly shown tournament winning form this season.
