Things look pretty tight in the betting for New Haven with pretty much a four way tie for favouritism. Included in the pile is the top seed, Sara Errani and defending champion Petra Kvitova. The big left handed Czech just can’t seem to get everything right all together at once, and her inconsistencies are an issue for backers.
So Errani is probably the stronger of the two for New Haven, but she suffered a third round exit in Cincinnati too, going out to her doubles partner Roberta Vinci. For all the grit and determination, and fighting to the last ball that Errani is all about, she is vulnerable on the hard court surfaces. Despite that, she went to the semi finals here last season and is the top seed this week, affording her a not-too bad draw. The top half of the draw is likely to produce the winner this week, because up there alongside Errani is Caroline Wozniacki. The Dane has some tremendous history at this event and may be worth backing to make a return to form.
Wozniacki won this event four times on the bounce between 2008 and 2011 and despite her recent slumps in form, she went back to the semi finals against last year. Sadly her run to a potential fifth title was stopped there because she had to withdraw from her semi final against Maria Kirilenko because of an injury. So you can’t ignore the affinity she has with Yale and she will probably have a bit of new found confidence after a run to the quarter finals of Cincinnati, beating Petra Kvitova along the way. It may just be worth a shot on Wozniacki to rediscover her old magic at New Haven this week.
What of Germany’s Angelique Kerber? After a career year in 2012, she just hasn’t hit the heights again in 2013 and looks out of the running. She should be going deeper in events by this stage of the season, but she isn’t delivering. The bottom half is packed with Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber, Sabine Lisicki and Dominika Cibulkova and therefore it is pretty hard to really pick out a stand out candidate. None of them are in the form of top quality tennis that they are all capable of. The deciding factor in the bottom half could be the potential quarter final match up between Cibulkova and Kerber. Cibulkova holds a 4-0 head to head record against Kerber, so that’s where the sensible money would go, and the Slovakian has been in some good form recently.
