Other Contenders
Marion Bartoli really should be a contender. She is extremely mobile and good on the dirt surface. The issue with her is that she hasn’t played a lot of competitive tennis either really, and hasn’t been seen since a first round defeat to Coco Vandeweghe in Monterrey at the start of April. She did put in an appearance for France in the Fed Cup, and her game is well suited to clay. It makes for a competitive top half of the draw, with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Elena Vesnina floating around. Down in the bottom half, you would have to look at second seed Dominika Cibulkova, who entered as a wild card. The Slovakian has immense power, if only she would back it up with consistency. She has been to one final this season, losing in Sydney to Agnieszka Radwanska. Has been patchy since, but gave Serena Williams a good duel in Miami in mid March. She hasn’t played a tournament since then so should be fresh and makes good value at 5/1 with online bookmaker Bet365.
But even the draw for Cibulkova is tricky, with the threats of Kaia Kanepi (the reigning champion) and Sorana Cirstea. Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro is great on clay, and turn on the style and power there and she makes pretty good value as well at a price of 11/2, and she was a losing finalist here last season. But then, just to measure up the competitiveness in this Portugal field, Julia Goerges and Francesca Schiavone are in the mix. The latter, Schiavone should be brimming with confidence after landing the Marrakech title on Sunday, her first success for a long time and only ever comes alive when on clay, which will make her a danger.
Best Outside Bet
Would take a look at the ever improving Urszula Radwanska as the outside bet at a long 50/1. Worth watching for match betting, but as she is lined up to go up against Cibulkova in the second round, there is a big question mark. But if she catches Cibulkova cold, then the Pole could have a good run.
