Baltacha Revisits Glory Moment in First Round at Eastbourne

We are lucky enough to be enjoying an overdose of Women’s tennis at the moment, as the build up to Wimbledon continues. Six of the top ten women in the World at playing in the UK at Eastbourne this week, the traditional build up tournament ahead of the Grand Slam. Wimbledon starts on June 21, and this for most of the players, will be the last chance to warm up, after making the recent switch from the clay court section of the season. Britain have already had one casualty at the AEGON International with Anne Keothavong falling in the first round to the experienced hand of Daniela Hantuchova. Britain’s Number One Elena Baltacha (150/1 at SkyBet) goes on Tuesday in her first round match, as she takes on Na Li, who Baltacha famously beat at Indian Wells, claiming her first ever World Top 10 scalp. Baltacha has been enjoying a fantastically impressive season, as she continues her efforts to climb up the World Rankings. Playing on home turf, should inspire her to recreate probably the best result of her career so far.

Queen of the court Caroline Wozniacki (7/1 at SkyBet) will start the tournament as one of the outright favourite, as the young Dane is a class act and full of promise. For being the top seed though, she has a pretty tough quarter of the draw. First up she takes on Aravane Rezai, who came from nowhere in Madrid to beat Venus Williams in the final on clay. That’s a tough opening match, and awaiting them in the second round is Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez who beat the talented Vera Zvonareva in the first round. Still, Wozniacki is second in the World rankings thanks to a very good season and is worth backing, but probably not the best bet to take with imposing draw. The ever improving Aussie Sam Stour (9/2 at SkyBet), however is. After losing the final of the French Open Grand Slam recently to Francesca Schiavone, the cool and collected Stosur will be a threat at Eastbourne with a nice draw working in her favour. Flavia Pennetta is in her half of the draw, along with the fiery Schiavone, but one thing Stosur does possess, is the grit and determination to come back from defeat, which makes her a great bet here.

The top half of the draw is packed with talent, and you can almost draw a name from a hat. Kim Clijsters (7/2 at SkyBet) is in the mix, along with Marion Bartoli and Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska. Radwanska actually is involved in one of the most anticipated first round matches at Eastbourne, as she goes up against one of my favourites, Victoria Azarenka (16/1 at SkyBet), who is looking to discover some of her top form. A few months ago, Azarenka would have been one of the top seeds at a tournament like this, but she has lost her way a little bit. She is mightily talented though, and if she gets past Radwanska (who actually is a bet well worth taking herself at 16/1 at SkyBet), then Azarenka is well worth an outside shot at the title here. Looking over the odds, Kim Clijsters may be worth a little punt, even though she has been out of action since April. She has all of the talent, but may be a little rusty and a little surprising she’s favourite in betting. But, for WTA Tennis betting tips this week, the prime candidates really are Samantha Stosur, simply because she is so cool on whichever surface she is playing on, and the longer shot to look out for, Flavia Pennetta out at 25/1 at SkyBet.
