And the World Cup 2010 winner is ...

The World Cup Draw secured not only the Groups for South Africa 2010, but also the fixtures of the participating nations. This meant that fans who want to travel to South Africa and support their team, know where their country is playing, against whom, and when. Over two million tickets have been sold by FIFA, and that equates to about two thirds of the total which will be available. The opening fixture of World Cup 2010, takes place on June 11th, kicking off an entire month of a football fest for the world to enjoy. The opening fixture is from Group A, and naturally concerns the host nation South Africa. Their opponents on Day 1 will be Mexico, with the match being held in Johannesburg. This match will set the tone and excitement for the rest of the tournament to come.

England, who were drawn in Group C along with Algeria, Slovenia and the USA, start their campaign the following day. In Rustenburg on June 12th, it will be England v USA, in a match which will have extra hype because of the one and only David Beckham. England’s former captain plays for the LA Galaxy, and there will be many a high profile spotlight on him when it comes to the big match. England’s second match is on June 18th, when they take on African side Algeria. The Algerians reached the Semi Final of the African Cup of Nations in January, but were knockout out in a bout of disgrace when they were reduced to 8 men in their semi final match against rivals Egypt. Something of an unknown quantity, their general performance through the African Cup of Nations, won’t have given their Group rivals much to worry about. The other European side in Group C along with England, are Slovenia. The two have never met in competition before, and while they are a promising technical side, England will be expected to have the edge in that fixture. England v Slovenia takes place on June 23rd.

Some other interesting dates from the first round, are Portugal v Brazil on June 25th, and favourites Spain have two interesting matches against Honduras and Chile respectively, taking place on June 21st and 25th. The first knockout stage starts on June 26th, and the Quarter Finals play on July 2nd and 3rd. The semi finals are played over two days on July 6th and 7th, and the big date to put in the calendar, is game 64 of the tournament, the World Cup Final on July 11th. Defending Champions Italy start their defence on June 14th, against one of the tipped dark horses, Paraguay.

There is little margin for error when it comes to results in the World Cup, as there are only three group matches per team. People always look to history when it comes to results, and this of course can have some bearing on World Cup Betting. History does have a peculiar way of repeating itself, and punters take inspiration from past results. Should England progress past the Group stage, they will play either the winner or runner’s-up from Group D. That Group contains Germany, Australia, Serbia and Ghana. While there is the potential for a famous World Cup clash between England and Germany, just as interestingly, the two favourites Spain and Brazil could meet in the first knockout stage as well, if one of them wins their group, and the other finishes as runner’s-up.
