Guardado started playing professionally in F.C. Atlas and made his league debut in August 2005 when he was 18 years old, in a 3–2 victory over Pachuca C.F. He eventually became a very important player for Atlas, and played 64 games for the club, scoring 7 goals.
In 2007 he moved on to Deportivo La Coruna and has moved the nets of opponents 8 times.
He made his first international appearance for Mexico in a friendly match against Hungary on December 14, 2005, just four months after his first team debut for Atlas. Guardado represented his country in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He played his first World Cup match against Argentina.
Guardado scored his first goal for Mexico in a friendly match against Venezuela in February 2007. In the final of the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Guardado scored the opening goal against the United States. But the goal proved futile as the US lifted the trophy 2-1, coming from behind.
He has, till September 2009, scored 13 international goals including 6 in the qualification matches for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Guardado was also selected as the Deportivo Player of the Year for 2008 and 2009.
