Track specialist Redvers a red-hot Victoria Cup tip

Horse Racing Betting

When there are big fields on the straight course at Ascot, it’s inevitable that at least two races will develop in one so it may be best to hedge your bets in this Saturday’s £7.5 Million Totescoop6 Victoria Cup by backing a selection drawn on opposite sides at the Berkshire course.

This is always a hugely competitive affair and 29 runners are due to line-up for the latest renewal with the weights headed by 2012 Ayr Gold Cup winner Captain Ramius (25/1 with Ladbrokes). But a more relevant form guide is a contest staged over track and trip in October when Heaven’s Guest (a general 20/1) beat Bertiewhittle (a general 25/1) and Loving Spirit (16/1 in most places). The latter comes out best at the weights of that trio and has been popular in the ante-post market but REDVERS, who was slowly away, wasn’t beaten far in fifth and looks even better treated. Ed Vaughan‘s six-year-old loves this track and was fourth in this race last year behind Excellent Guest (a general 20/1) and Bertiewhittle. The winner also takes his chance again but the easier surface will suit Redvers better and he also looks to have a more favourable draw this year. Flyman (a general 16/1) and Purcell (11/1 with BetVictor, Unibet and 888sport) are others drawn low who look to have a decent chance in this annual cavalry charge as both arrive in fine form. The worry about the latter is the switch to Turf.

But, as I said, this is almost two races in one so we have to have a saver among those drawn high. Glen Moss starts right up against the stands’ rail and can backed at 16/1 in several places. David Brown‘s charge will be up with the pace from the stalls and looks in good order. But he’s been raised 5lb since just holding off Louis The Pious (20/1 with Betfred and on betfair) at Haydock two weeks ago, when Don’t Bother Me (a general 16/1) was fourth and Bertiewhittle only sixth, and there is no guarantee that he’ll confirm the form with the runner-up. Belgian Bill (25/1 with bet365, Coral and William Hill) and the talented-but-enigmatic Pastoral Player (33/1 with BetVictor, Ladbrokes, Unibet and 888sport) are also drawn on the stands’ side but may need the run and AYAAR is more interesting.

Luca Cumani‘s runners often need an outing to blow away the cobwebs and his four-year-old will have derived plenty of benefit from his run behind Georgian Bay (20/1 with BetVictor, Unibet and 888sport) on the all-weather last month. Frankie Dettori rides and he makes more appeal than Brownsea Brink (14/1 with William Hill) if the high numbers prove best. Ayaar is 16/1 with several firms.
