Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Favourites and Outsiders

This is an interesting race from a Cheltenham Festival betting perspective as some long odds winners have come up in it.

Three of the last five winners of the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle has been at least 33/1 SP.

So there is a trend there and that’s because this is just such a wide-open contest normally, with no real clues about how well any entry is going to react on the day.

The best punters can do is pick apart the bits of ratings that are on the table and watch the betting market for notable movers.

So this is a race where not only those at the head of the market, but those big each-way considerations have to be sized up.

Again, a lot of the entries could end up elsewhere at the Cheltenham Festival 2022.

Closer to the start of the race, our betting experts will be taking a more detailed look at Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle odds.

But the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle odds from an ante-post perspective at least allow our betting experts to scour the field for some early considerations.

About the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle

The Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle was introduced into the Cheltenham Festival in 2005 so it is one of the newer races.

That was the year that the Festival got extended to four days and the Fred Winter entered the frame along with some other races.

It was initially a Listed grade race, in 2009 it was moved up to Grade 3 where it is today.

The official name of the race is the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, and that is named in memory of Fred Winter.

Winter had a big career at the Cheltenham Festival as both a jockey and as a trainer. The race is open to 4-year-olds only and it is a handicap fixture over a 2m trip (approx). The race features 8 hurdles and is only for juvenile novices.

Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle contenders – March 15th, 2022

We take a look through some of the early entries that could make a bold bit for success in the Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle odds 2022.

The current 11/4 race favourite in Cheltenham betting is GAELIC WARRIOR* (odds recorded at 18:12 GMT on February 28th, 2022 at Bet365).

The Willie Mullins-trained gelding has yet to get off the mark and will have his first run for his new trainer at Cheltenham in March.

There have been three efforts by Gaelic Warrior over in France in which some promise has been shown in the likes of conditional races.

He’s obviously coming in well-rated for the contest and for a top yard, so could feature.

THE TIDE TURNS has been getting some recent action under his belt, which could help his chances at success in this one.

He got off the mark at Punchestown in January before being thrown into some pattern company.

The Tide Turns wasn’t disgraced with fourth-place finishes in a Grade 1 and Grade 3 and that form could see him put something together as he looks to be developing since moving to Gordon Elliott this season.

Another of Gordon Elliott’s entries is FIL DOR who has been in cracking form this season. A wide-margin win on his debut saw him follow up with a Grade 3 and then a Grade 2 win.

He couldn’t extend that winning form as he was pushed all the way up to the top level in early February, taking a runner-up spot at Leopardstown.

Fil D’or could well have solid claims from 7/1 in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ betting* (odds recorded at 18:12 GMT on February 28th, 2022 at Bet365).

PETIT TONNERRE has won his last three, the latest of those being on his first run for new trainer Jonjo O’Neill in late February.

This is a big step up in grade, but there have been encouraging signs there.

KNIGHT SALUTE could make an impact if he goes in this one. He is also an early entry for the Triumph Hurdle.

Knight Salute has won all five trips over the hurdles so far and looks to be a rapid improver.

He put in a great shift in late February to claim his latest win which was at Kempton by more than three lengths, delivering the odds on the day.

BELL EX ONE may also be considered for the shortlist in Boodles Juvenile Handicap racing odds.

He has made the move to Paul Nicholls for this season and does so with nice form from behind him having scored a couple of minor hurdles success over in Ireland.

Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Trends Cheltenham 2022

For the next part of this Arkle Betting Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some trends surrounding the event.

To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Grade 1 fixture.

Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Trainer Statistics

The two leading trainers in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ in the last two decades are Paul Nicholls and Gordon Elliott.

They have both taken three wins each in that span. The latter though has a better strike rate, getting his tally of wins from fewer race entries.

Elliott has been responsible for two of the last four winners of this race, getting there with Veneer Of Charm in 2018 and then Aramax in 2020.

No other trainer has won the race more than once in that period.

So entries from those two could be worth casting an eye over for Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle betting at the Cheltenham Festival 2022.

Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Jockey Statistics

There is little to go by in the Fred Winter at the Festival when it comes to jockey trends.

No active jockey has taken a race win more than once in the last 20 renewals.

The one that has the best strike rate though is last year’s winner on Jeff Kidder, Sean Flanagan who got the score in just his second ride in the race.

Other Key Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Trends

So with not too much helping out Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle Cheltenham odds in terms of jockey, what other trends could feature?

There have been some longer priced winners coming home first in this contest recently.

Seven of the last 10 winners have been at least 25/1 odds and only one favourite has scored in that period (Band Of Outlaws in 2019).

Only one of the previous 17 winners had run in a handicap race last time out and there has been a definite trend to French and Irish Bred horses, as all but two of the last 17 winners have been one of those.

15 of the last 17 Fred Winter winners had also carded between 3 and 5 races that season.

Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle 2021 Review

There was a big upset in last year’s Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle. JEFF KIDDER was ridden to the line first by Sean Flanagan for trainer Noel Meade, defying some massive 80/1 odds.

He looked a bit spent a couple from home and then produced a big fight back to rally and then got himself in front during the run-in and held on.

The race favourite Saint Sam could do nothing about Jeff Kidder at the end after having been right at the final hurdle. He finished two lengths back of the winner.

ELHAM VALLEY, another long-priced runner at 66/1, did enough to hold on to take third.
