Aberdeen Preview – Are Dons going to build on last week’s win and end their home hoodoo against Celtic?

A week is a long time in football, as the cliche goes, and that has certainly been the case for Aberdeen. It was a long international break for the Dons who had managed just one win in four games and were falling further away from third with every passing week. It meant that the clash with Motherwell – who occupied third spot – was going to be an extremely important game. Three points were almost a must for Derek McInnes’ team and they duly got them – in some style too. It was Aberdeen’s best performance of the season and they were convincing 3-0 winners at Fir Park. The challenge for them now is building on that match and attempting to win consecutive games in the league for the first time this season.

McInnes surprised many last week with his team selection which featured two full backs in central midfield. It was a decision he was partially forced into with a number of his midfielders unavailable and it will be interesting to see if he sticks with the same selection now that his more established players are coming back. Whoever takes the field will be hoping they can put a Celtic team – who have been unimpressive away from home in the last few weeks – under pressure from the start just as they did against Motherwell.

Celtic Preview – Can Celtic improve their recent away performances and get what would be an important three points?

Neil Lennon would have been looking for a response from his team following the incredibly disappointing 2-0 defeat away to Livingston at the beginning of the month. Celtic had the whole of the international break to stew on that loss and the performance. Lennon has got the response he would have been hoping for with his team thumping Ross County at home last Saturday before a memorable 2-1 win at home to Lazio in the Europa League in midweek. Arguably, though, the biggest test is yet to come as Celtic face the first away game since that Livi match. It’s just one point from their last two away games and Aberdeen are always going to be up for the visit of the eight-time champions.

There have been few teams able to live with Celtic at home this season but their vulnerability is very much on their travels. An insipid performance in a 1-1 draw away to Hibs meant the defeat to Livingston knocked Celtic off the top of the table. They have since retaken the lead but only courtesy of goals scored. Having to travel to Pittodrie on the back of what was a grueling European game on Thursday is going to be another examination of Celtic’s resilience.

Key-Facts – Aberdeen vs Celtic

  • Aberdeen will be confident coming into this one having beaten Motherwell 3-0 and doing so in impressive fashion
  • Celtic have responded well since losing to Livingston at the beginning of the month – this will be another rest of their resolve, however
  • It’s over three years since Aberdeen defeated Celtic at Pittodrie – they have lost their last six since then

Aberdeen vs Celtic Betting Advice

These two teams are well known to each other and the games are usually always packed full of incident and entertainment. It’s coming up on four years since Aberdeen got the better of Celtic in a home game and they will feel victory is long overdue. McInnes will take confidence from how the visitors laboured in their last two away games and look to make it as difficult as possible. The champions clinched last season’s title here back in May and will be hoping for another big three points.

The Dons have only scored in one of their last six against Celtic but they have scored in all four home league games this season. Celtic are unlikely to make too many changes for this one so it will require a big effort from the players who played on Thursday. Both teams to score may have occurred too often in this fixture but it looks the way to go on Sunday.
