Aberdeen Preview – Can Dons put their league struggles behind them and reach the last eight?

Pressure is beginning to build on Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes following a dismal start to 2020. Aberdeen have returned from the winter break in extremely underwhelming form, failing to score in all four leagues games this year. Their only goal came in the previous round of this competition when narrowly seeing off League One side Dumbarton. The disappointment and frustration amongst fans is unsurprisingly growing at the moment with the Dons sitting in fourth.

Aberdeen’s struggles in front of goal are coinciding with a quiet spell for striker Sam Cosgrove. His penalty against Dumbarton along with a number of wasted opportunities in recent games are indicative of how difficult both the club and player are finding it at the moment.

You have to go back to 2016 for the last time Aberdeen failed to reach at least the semi-final of this competition so it’s clearly one they target and have had success in the recent past. McInnes will hope that trend can continue and spark an improved performance and return to goal scoring form for his team.
As you would expect for a team who have enjoyed success in the Scottish Cup Aberdeen have a strong record at home. Their last defeat in the competition at Pittodrie was all the way back in 2010.

Kilmarnock Preview – Will Killie build on two recent wins and continue progressing in the Cup?

Alex Dyer was given the Kilmarnock job until the end of the season at the end of 2019. That was despite his team going through a really tough spell. Killie had won one match in 11 matches to end the calendar year and there were legitimate concerns that they would be dragged into the relegation battle. Now, approaching the fifth round Scottish Cup tie with Aberdeen, they have won three of their last five matches.

Two of those wins have been consecutive league victories against Ross County and Hearts where they have netted six goals in total. The Rugby Park goal hit Queens Park for six in the previous round of this competition and have hit 14 in their five matches since returning from the winter break.

Kilmarnock supporters will probably feel they are overdue an extended run in the Scottish Cup having done little of note in recent years. Their best showing recently is a quarter-final appearance when losing out on penalties to, ironically, Aberdeen.

The fact that Dyer’s men have been able to pick up a couple of wins heading into this match will ensure they can give more priority to the cup than they may have done if they were still struggling for league points.

Aberdeen vs Kilmarnock Betting Advice

Aberdeen are favoured to progress to the next round due to being at home and sitting above Kilmarnock in the table. However, it’s hard to make a case for them on recent form. The hosts are struggling for goals but will be positive about the fact they are not conceding many either (three clean sheets in their last five).

Killie have shown improvement since the winter break and that certainly applies in front of goal where they are looking much more threatening. Away wins and goals have been hard to come by, though. That was their first in eight matches and they scored just four goals in the seven before then.

Key Facts – Aberdeen vs Kilmarnock Betting Tip

  • Aberdeen have scored one goal in five games this year, the solitary goal coming in the previous round of the Scottish Cup
  • Having went seven games without a win Kilmarnock have won three of their last five matches
  • Killie were thumped 3-0 on their last visit to the Pittodrie back in early November

This has all the makings of being a war of attrition on Saturday. Aberdeen are looking desperate in attack at the moment and whilst Killie have managed to find a few goals of late it’s hard to rely on them going forward. As such, under 2.5 goals is the confident betting selection. Seven of the last nine meetings between the two teams have went this way.
